Adam Greenberg is getting a chance to resume his baseball career with the Baltimore Orioles.

The 31-year-old returned to the major leagues for one at-bat in October, more than seven years after he was beaned in his debut. He agreed to a minor league contract with the Orioles and will have a chance to earn a job at their Triple-A farm team in Norfolk, Va.

"To get the opportunity with the Orioles means everything to me," he said Saturday.

He had contacted Baltimore manager Buck Showalter at the winter meetings this month in Nashville, Tenn.

"I just walked up to him, introduced myself," Greenberg said. "I've always kind of looked at Buck and said that would be the guy that I would love to play, that type of hard-nose mentality."

Showalter put him in touch with Orioles special assistant Brady Anderson and general manager Dan Duquette.

"I'm going to spring (training) with the opportunity to make the Triple-A squad," he said. "Being 31, they said I'm not going to be going to Double-A and taking away a prospect's spot. It's Triple-A, big leagues ? obviously I'm not going to make the big league team out of camp ? it's Triple-A, big leagues or nothing, and that's great."

Selected by the Chicago Cubs in the ninth round of the 2002 amateur draft, Greenberg made his big league debut as a pinch hitter on July 9, 2005, and was hit on the back of his head with the first pitch from the Marlins' Valerio de los Santos. Greenberg sustained a concussion and was removed for a pinch runner.

Released by the Cubs in June 2006, he had minor league stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Kansas City Royals, the speedy outfielder signed a minor league deal with the Cincinnati Reds and was cut at the end of spring training, hampered by a rotator cuff injury. He spent 2009, '10 and '11 with the Bridgeport Bluefish of the independent Atlantic League.

After a petition on Change.org urged a big league team to give him another chance, the Marlins signed him and sent him up as a pinch hitter on Oct. 2 against New York Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. Greenberg struck out on three pitches against the eventual NL Cy Young Award winner.

"The last few years have been very, very difficult and challenging, but I got myself physically where I need to be and more important than anything, mentally I'm at a point in my career where I'm able to commit 110 percent back to the game," he said.

His agreement was reported by several media outlets on Thursday.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The stock market moved between small gains and losses in midday trading Thursday. Uncertainty about the approaching "fiscal cliff," just days away, was top of mind for many traders.

The House planned to move ahead on what Speaker John Boehner called "Plan B," though President Barack Obama has threatened to veto it.

The political haggling made traders indecisive, with minor developments pushing the market back and forth.

"Every time someone makes a speech, you get another move in the market," said Ben Fischer, founder and managing director of NFJ Investment Group in Dallas. "Everyone's just tracking it on a very short-term basis, and right now it doesn't look all that wonderful."

At 12:05 p.m. EST, the Dow Jones industrial average was down five points at 13,246. The Standard & Poor's 500 was up one point at 1,437. The Nasdaq composite index slipped three to 3,040.

Also at the forefront for many traders was the news that NYSE Euronext, the parent of the New York Stock Exchange, planned to sell itself to IntercontinentalExchange, an upstart and lesser-known exchange operator based in Atlanta.

NYSE Euronext's stock surged 34 percent, rising $8.06 to $32.11. IntercontinentalExchange fell 29 cents to $128.02. That signals traders think the proposed deal could be more beneficial to NYSE Euronext than to its potential buyer. The marriage still needs the approval of regulators, and it isn't clear if they'll offer it.

In Washington, the Republicans' "Plan B" would raise taxes on the wealthy, something the Democrats have pushed for. But the plan also left in place budget cuts to the military and domestic agencies that Democrats have generally opposed.

If the Republicans and Democrats don't work out a compromise before the end of the month, the U.S. could go over the "fiscal cliff," a reference to big tax increases and sweeping government spending cuts that would automatically kick in if no budget deal is in place. Some economists fear that would push the U.S. back into recession.

To be sure, many observers expect that a deal will be worked out ahead of the deadline ? perhaps at the last minute, and with lots of political theatrics, but worked out nonetheless.

Fischer cautioned that even a successful compromise wouldn't necessarily send the market soaring. The market already assumes that the fiscal cliff will be worked out, he said, evidenced by its more-or-less steady increase since mid-November.

"The market already anticipates a good outcome," Fischer said. "So even if you have a good outcome, I don't think the market will go up that much."

Even without the complications of the fiscal cliff, the U.S. economy has been difficult to read, a pattern that continued Thursday.

The government said the U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of 3.1 percent over the summer, higher than the previous estimate of 2.7 percent. But the growth is likely to slow in the current quarter and early next year.

The government also reported that the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose last week, a disappointment after four straight weeks of declines. But the four-week moving average of jobless claims, a less volatile measurement, fell.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note was unchanged at 1.80 percent.

A slate of companies reported earnings, with varied results:

?Darden Restaurants, the parent of Olive Garden and Red Lobster, fell $1.34 to $45.47 after the company reported lower profit and revenue.

?Rite Aid, the drugstore chain, soared 14 percent, rising 15 cents to $1.19, after the company reported its first quarterly profit since 2007.

?Discover Financial Services fell $1.56 to $38.21. The company reported higher profit and revenue, but earnings missed analysts' expectations.

?Scholastic, publisher of the best-selling "The Hunger Games" trilogy, slipped 65 cents to $28.64 after reporting lower profit and revenue.

S.C. Johnson & Son Inc.?s largest global manufacturing facility will now run virtually 100 percent on clean energy with the installation of two wind turbines at the Mount Pleasant site, the company said Tuesday.

The two turbines started spinning Tuesday and will produce about 8 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually at the company?s Waxdale manufacturing facility, enough to power 700 homes for a year, the company said.

The combination of the wind turbines and two cogeneration turbines that have been in place since the mid-2000s will allow the facility to produce an average of 100 percent of its electrical energy on-site. The cogeneration systems use waste methane gas from a nearby public landfill and clean-burning natural gas to generate 85 percent of the facility?s electrical energy, the company said.

The 415-foot-tall wind turbines, with their 135-foot-long blades, will help reduce carbon emissions associated with powering the facility by 6,000 metric tons annually. The company said it?s the largest on-site, company-owned wind turbine manufacturing project in the Midwest.

The Racine-based consumer products company?s Waxdale facility makes brand products including Scrubbing Bubbles, Glade and Windex.

Hugo Chavez's brother to visit Venezuelan leader

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? President Hugo Chavez's elder brother reportedly was heading to Cuba on Tuesday to visit the Venezuelan leader amid uncertainty and concern at home over his condition after a fourth cancer-related surgery.

The government newspaper Correo del Orinoco said Adan Chavez planned to leave in the afternoon. It also said that the president's father, Hugo de los Reyes Chavez, had plans to travel to Havana and that Chavez's mother might go with him, though that had not been confirmed.

Against the backdrop of Chavez's illness, many Venezuelans are talking about the possibility of a looming transition of power and a new presidential election. Before undergoing surgery, Chavez designated Vice President Nicolas Maduro as his chosen successor to take his place if necessary.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos expressed concern Tuesday about what might happen if a post-Chavez transition were to go badly. In a radio interview, he said a peaceful and problem-free change would have "no repercussion in the region."

"What would be terrible is if that transition weren't easy, were problematic," Santos said in an interview with Colombia's W Radio. "That would generate problems in the region. That's why I've said that Chavez is a factor of stability at this time."

Chavez's government has been appointed a facilitator in peace talks between Colombia's government and rebels, and Santos noted that he has had a good relationship with Venezuela's leftist leader despite their differences.

"I hope it stays that way, whether with Chavez or with his replacement," Santos said, adding that he had spoken with Maduro on various occasions.

Chavez hasn't spoken publicly since his Dec. 11 surgery for an undisclosed type of pelvic cancer. It was his fourth cancer-related operation since June 2011.

Government officials say the president's four children and a son-in-law have been with him in Havana since the operation. The government has said Chavez suffered complications during the operation but has been recovering.

Santos said he didn't have specific information about Chavez's condition.

"I know that it's complicated," Santos said in the interview. "He wouldn't have said goodbye in that way if he didn't have complications, but today I don't know his exact state of health, and nobody does."

"We've discussed this with other presidents, and the truth is they aren't very informed about exactly what state of health he is in today," Santos added.

The leaders of Bolivia and Uruguay have both expressed interest in traveling to Havana to visit Chavez, though so far neither has made the trip.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff called Maduro on Tuesday to congratulate Chavez's allies for winning most gubernatorial seats in elections on Sunday, and she also asked about Chavez's health.

"Maduro told Dilma that Chavez is recovering, and the president wished the Venezuelan president a speedy recovery," Rousseff's office said in a statement on its website.

Adan Chavez, who is the eldest of six brothers in the president's family, was re-elected governor in the president's home state of Barinas over the weekend.

On Tuesday, the governor said the relatively low 53 percent turnout in the nationwide elections was a problem that affected candidates in both camps. He added that some who voted for the president's re-election in October had apparently voted for the opposition this time.

"Some seem to have had the nerve to have voted for opposition candidates. That, of course, is a big contradiction," he said in a televised speech. "It shows an ideological weakness that we have to continue working on."

Chavez, 58, is scheduled to be sworn in for a new six-year term Jan. 10. Under Venezuela's constitution, if the president dies, is incapacitated or steps down, a new election would be held within 30 days.

National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello declined to speculate when asked at a news conference whether Chavez will be back in Venezuela by Jan. 10.

"There's a date established in the constitution, and our concern really is that the president recovers and is totally healthy, and, God willing, he will be," Cabello said.

When asked the specifics of this misinformation, Lt. Vance said,?"I?m not a social media expert," but?cited everything from?erroneous?assumptions?to information "deemed as threatening," homing in on what seems to be the most egregious, fake accounts and "quotes by people who are posing as the shooter."

Most would?agree free speech doesn't get more obnoxious or offensive than that of the Westboro Baptist Church, known for picketing funerals of soldiers ??and now?threatening to picket the funerals of those killed at Sandy Hook Elementary. In 2011, the Supreme Court upheld?the Westboro Baptist Church's right to picket the funeral of Matthew?Snyder, a U.S. Marine who was killed in Iraq. The SCOUTUS judgement deemed the church not liable for causing?emotional distress, even if the speech was found to be "outrageous."?It was Snyder's father who filed the lawsuit.

As for "misinformation" allegedly interfering in the investigation, it's unlikely any such cases would hold up in the Supreme Court. Just this year, in the case of the U.S. v. Alvarez, the Supreme Court ruled that even false statements ? in this case, lying about military medals ??are protected by the First Amendment.?

Certainly, law enforcement isn't fooled by social media accounts claiming to belong to someone who is no longer alive. As Lt. Vance emphasized to the media on Sunday, "social media websites that contain information relative to this case are not being posted by the Connecticut state police, are not being posted by the Newtown police, are not being posted by any authorities in this case."?

Though likely?protected by the First Amendment, those who post offensive content could face, under Connecticut law, a civil claim for the infliction of emotional distress, the Berkman Center's?Hermes said, adding that there have been some lower court rulings on such cases.

That is, if the social networks themselves don't shut down the activity first.?

While neither confirmed with NBC News, both Facebook and Twitter seem to have the fake Adam Lanza accounts under control. Those which popped up on Friday seem to have disappeared by Monday. No courts required.

You can't blame Lt. Vance for trotting out the prosecution threats, especially if he's trying to chill out the nastiest of?trolls. As with an increasing number of?major news events,?law enforcement is having a hard time hearing the signal through all of the Internet noise.
