Africa - the ultimate solo journey for a baby boomer | BoomerCafe ...

?
Wow. If we talk about baby boomers with active lifestyles, this one is hard to beat: Janet Clare, the author of the novel Afterthought Africa the ultimate solo journey for a baby boomer, takes a solo trek in Africa. And she came back with dreams fulfilled.

I went to Africa alone. No companion, no tour, just an American woman of a certain age on her own. I had read Isak Dinesen and Beryl Markham in high school and, like so many others, I wanted to be Jane Goodall; I was completely enthralled with the idea of this mysterious continent and the women who made it their home.

Friends and family were incredulous at the audacity of my plan, thinking that either I?d lost my mind or I was extraordinarily brave. Neither was true. I still had most of my marbles and I?d never been a risk taker. I considered myself cautiously adventuresome. I had limits. I didn?t mind getting dirty during the day, but I definitely wanted a hot shower at the end of it, and maybe a cocktail.

I politely discouraged anyone who suggested they might join me. This trip was too important and I had no desire to be accommodating;there?d be no waiting around while someone let her nails dry and her hair curl. My husband would also be sitting this one out. His choice, but he understood. Two years earlier I?d survived a life-threatening illness and going to Africa was a dream, but it was my dream. During my nearly six months of planning, he encouraged me, then nervously wished me love and luck as I started on my 14,000-mile journey.

Janet Clare

It was three weeks of heaven-on-earth traveling through South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. A few days in Capetown, then on to a photo safari: Kruger, Victoria Falls, the Kalahari Desert ? and the incredible Makgadikgadi Pan ? ending with an elephant-back safari in the Okavango Delta. I was astounded to be so far away and to feel comforted from the first moment. Maybe it had to do with being in the cradle of civilization where we all began, but for me, it was like coming home. Enraptured by the land, the huge sky, the incredible animals and, not least, the people. I felt comforted and safe.

Black or white, the people in Africa never fail to look you in the eye. Disarming and genuine, they respect the land and everything on it and, because you?ve come to see their country, because you care, they respect you and thank you with their knowledge and attention.

Before Ileft for Africa, I expressed some hesitation to a friend who had traveled there many times.

?Don?t worry,? he said. ?Africa will take care of you.?

He was right.

Tongue Rings Have Come A Long Way In The Past Two Decades ...

Tongue rings are now not only the third most popular of all piercings, but they have also become much safer to have done.

Tongue rings were once only rarely seen and people heard more often the horror stories about people who get it done. That has changed a lot over the past couple of decades. Tongue piercings have become much more common due mainly to safer standards in the piercing industry.

Where once people would actually get their tongues pierced at home by friends they now realize the importance of going to a professional who has done tongue rings before. Unlike other parts of the body that are commonly pierced, the tongue has two major veins running through it. If either of these veins is even nicked by the needle, it can cause severe blood loss.

Even when done correctly tongue rings still take two to six weeks to heal. It can take up to six months for the piercing to be fully healed. During this healing time, it is not uncommon for the tongue to swell. This is easily treated with cold drinks, sucking on ice and taking anti-inflammatory to bring the swelling down.

Also during the healing time, it is highly recommended that the pierced person refrain from alcohol, smoking, and making tongue contact with other people. Spicy food is also something to be avoided. And after doing any of the above, it is strongly suggested that they rinse their mouths with alcohol free mouthwash. Being such a warm moist environment, people who get tongue rings need to take extra care to avoid infection. They must also tighten the barbell daily to avoid it coming lose and them swallowing it.

It is commonly believed the tongue rings first got started at the Gauntlet. The Gauntlet was the first professional body piercing shop in the United States. Founder of the Gauntlet and body-piercing pioneer, Elayne Angel, is often given credit with popularizing the tongue rings.

Retaliation suit costs construction company $38,500 ? Business ...

MKB Construction has settled charges it retaliated against an employee in El Paso after he complained of sexual harassment on the job.

The man claimed in an EEOC complaint that a male co-worker made sexual comments and pressed against him in a sexual manner on the job at one of the company?s work sites. The victim reported the harassment to a supervisor and was fired in retaliation.

After attempting to reach a settlement with MKB Construction, the EEOC filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas.

To settle the case, MKB signed a two-year consent decree under which it will pay the man $38,500, issue an anti-discrimination policy, post a notice of intent to comply with discrimination and retaliation laws and provide training for its managers, supervisors and HR staff.

Note: Remember that sexual harassment is an equal opportunity offense?it can be opposite sex or same sex and involve either men or women. The common denominator is that employers must recognize and stop it. Firing those who complain will not make it go away.

Nasty storms blamed 1 death, make travel tough

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Freezing rain and sleet made for a sloppy Christmas trek in parts of the nation's midsection, while residents along the Gulf Coast faced thunderstorms, high winds and tornadoes that were doing damage in some areas.

Winds toppled a tree onto a pickup truck in the Houston area, killing the driver. Icy roads already were blamed for a 21-vehicle pileup in Oklahoma, where authorities warned would-be travelers to stay home.

Trees fell on a few houses in central Louisiana's Rapides Parish but there were no injuries reported so far and crews were cutting trees out of roadways to get to people in their homes, said sheriff's Lt. Tommy Carnline. Possible damage also was reported near McNeil, Miss.

Fog blanketed highways, including arteries in the Atlanta area where motorists slowed as a precaution. In New Mexico, drivers across the eastern plains had to fight through snow, ice and low visibility.

At least three tornadoes were reported in Texas, though only one building was damaged, according to the National Weather Service. Tornado watches were in effect across southern Louisiana and Mississippi.

More than 180 flights nationwide were canceled by midday, according to the flight tracker FlightAware.com. More than half were canceled by American Airlines and its regional affiliate, American Eagle.

American is headquartered and has its biggest hub at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Christmas lights also were knocked out with more than 70,000 people without power in east Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana.

Meanwhile, blizzard conditions were possible for parts of Illinois, Indiana and western Kentucky with predictions of 4 to 7 inches of snow. Much of Oklahoma and Arkansas braced under a winter storm warning of an early mix of rain and sleet forecast to eventually turn to snow. About a dozen counties in Missouri were under a blizzard warning from Tuesday night to noon Wednesday.

Some mountainous areas of Arkansas' Ozark Mountains could get up to 10 inches of snow, which would make travel "very hazardous or impossible" in the northern tier of the state from near whiteout conditions, the National Weather Service said.

The holiday may conjure visions of snow and ice, but twisters this time of year are not unheard of. Ten storm systems in the last 50 years have spawned at least one Christmastime tornado with winds of 113 mph or more in the South, said Chris Vaccaro, a National Weather Service spokesman in Washington, via email.

The most lethal were the storms of Dec. 24-26, 1982, when 29 tornadoes in Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi killed three people and injured 32; and those of Dec. 24-25, 1964, when two people were killed and about 30 people injured by 14 tornadoes in seven states.

Quarter-sized hail reported early Tuesday in western Louisiana was expected to be just the start of a severe weather threat on the Gulf Coast, said meteorologist Mike Efferson at the weather service office in Slidell, La.

Storms along the Gulf Coast could bring winds up to 70 mph, heavy rain, more large hail and dangerous lightning in Louisiana and Mississippi, Efferson said. Furthermore, warm, moist air colliding with a cold front could produce dangerous straight-line winds.

The storm was moving quickly as it headed into northeast Louisiana and Mississippi into the late afternoon and early evening, said Bill Adams at the weather service's Shreveport, La., office.

In Mississippi, Gov. Phil Bryant urged residents to have a plan for any severe weather.

"It only takes a few minutes, and it will help everyone have a safe Christmas," Bryant said.
