GOP Congressman Blames Obama For Zimmerman Having To Stand Trial For Killing Trayvon Martin

Congressman Steve King (R-IA) suggested Sunday that George Zimmerman should never have even had to stand trial for killing Trayvon Martin, blaming President Obama and his Department of Justice for the case.

On Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace claimed that though ?local authorities originally decided not to prosecute,? Florida prosecutors decided to after civil rights groups and ?even the president stepped into the case.? King furthered this misleading claim and then lamented that Zimmerman even had to stand trial for Martin?s death.

WALLACE: Congressman King, let me start with you. Should George Zimmerman ever have been prosecuted?

KING: From what i have seen of the evidence, I would say no. My sympathy goes out also to the Martin family and the Zimmerman family for this ordeal that they?ve been through. The evidence didn?t support prosecution and the Justice Department engaged in this, the President engaged in this and turned it into a political issue that should have been handled exclusively with law and order. I regret that this all happened. I?m sorry that it was turned into a race issue by the media. Otherwise, it would have been tried or not tried depending on the laws that were there. This is unfortunate.

Watch the video:

Wallace and King?s statements both confused what actually happened. After Zimmerman shot and killed Martin ? an unarmed 17-year-old carrying only a package of Skittles and an iced tea ? police initially did decline to charge him. While the U.S. Department of Justice did indicate that it would conduct a review of the case to determine whether there were an federal civil rights laws violated on March 20, the Florida state attorney sent the state case to a grand jury on the same day. Only three days later did the president weigh in, calling only for a full investigation and noting that if he had a son, ?he?d look like Trayvon.? The federal investigation has been on hold while the state trial played out.

While the Florida jury ultimately found that the prosecution had not proven the case beyond all reasonable doubts, the grand jury in the case also did find that there was ?probable cause.? King?s suggestion that a ?not guilty? verdict proves that there should not have been an investigation or trial at all suggests a stunning disregard for the value of Martin?s life. But his ? and Wallace?s ? inference that there would not have been a prosecution if not for President Obama is flatly contradicted by the facts.

Police: Teen in Asiana crash hit by fire truck

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? One of the Chinese teenagers who died in the Asiana Airlines disaster was struck by a fire truck while she was covered in foam that crews had sprayed to douse the fire aboard the plane, police said Friday.

It wasn't clear, however, whether 16-year-old Ye Meng Yuan was already dead or whether she was alive after the crash Saturday at San Francisco airport. Authorities were still trying to determine the cause of death.

Police officials confirmed that she was hit by the truck. She was on the ground and covered in the foam.

"When the fire truck repositioned itself to continue battling flames from the fuselage, the victim passenger was found in the tire track of the fire truck," police spokesman Albie Esparza said.

Asiana Flight 214 collided with a rocky seawall just short of its intended airport runway on Saturday. Two people were killed and dozens of others injured although most suffered minor injuries. Investigators have said the plane came in too low and slow.

Nearly a week after the crash, investigators have pieced together an outline of the event ? what should have been a smooth landing by seasoned pilots turning into a disaster.

With each new bit of information, the picture emerging is of pilots who were supposed to be closely monitoring the plane's airspeed, but who didn't realize until too late that the aircraft was dangerously low and slow. Nothing disclosed so far by the National Transportation Safety Board investigators indicates any problems with the Boeing 777's engines or the functioning of its computers and automated systems.

"The first thing that's taught to a pilot is to look at the airspeed indicator. It is the most important instrument in the cockpit," said Lee Collins, a pilot with 29 years and 18,000 hours experience flying a variety of airliners. "Airspeed is everything. You have airspeed, you live. You don't, you die."

Investigators are still trying to nail down hundreds of details about the crash last Saturday that killed two people and injured dozens. NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman has cautioned against reaching conclusions.

But investigators already know a great deal. They've listened to the Boeing 777's voice recorder, which captured the last two hours of conversation in the cockpit. They've downloaded its flight data recorder, which captured 1,400 indicators of what was happening on the plane, from the temperatures inside and out to the positions of cockpit instruments.

The flight's four pilots have been interviewed, as have passengers and dozens of witnesses. Air traffic control recordings and video of the flight's last moments, including the crash itself, have been examined.

Here's what investigators have revealed about a Seoul-to-San Francisco flight that was normal until its last minutes, when the wide-body jet carrying 307 people rapidly lost altitude:

The pilot flying the plane, Lee Gang-kuk, 46, had nearly 10,000 hours of flying experience, but just 35 hours flying a Boeing 777. He had recently completed training that qualified him to fly passengers in the 777, and was about halfway through his post-qualification training. He was seated in the left cockpit pilot seat. In the co-pilot position was Lee Jeong-Min, an experienced captain who was supervising Lee Gang-kuk's training. It was Lee Gang-kuk's first time landing a 777 in San Francisco.

At 11:19:23 PDT, after a nearly 11-hour flight, the plane was traveling over the San Francisco Peninsula. The weather was near perfect, sunny with light winds.

Lee Jeong-Min and a third pilot sitting in a jump seat just behind the main seats, a first officer, were supposed to be monitoring the plane's controls. One of their most important jobs was to closely monitor the plane's two airspeed indicators. In the U.S., if an amber bar is more than five knots above or below the target speed during landing, the pilot flying is supposed to abort and make another attempt, according to pilots interviewed by The Associated Press.

As the plane descended to 1,600 feet, the autopilot was turned off. At 1,400 feet, the plane's airspeed was about 170 knots.

The flight data recorder shows the plane's autothrottle ? similar to a car's cruise control ? was set on idle during the approach, Hersman said, and that there were multiple commands at times given to the autothrottle and autopilot.

At 11:26:58 and 1,000 feet, the pilots made contact with the airport tower. When they were cleared to land 12 seconds later, the plane's altitude had dropped to about 600 feet. The plane was configured for its approach and the landing gear was down. The airspeed was about 149 knots. A target speed of 137 knots was set.

At 500 feet there was an audible automated altitude alert. The airspeed was about 134 knots. At this point that pilots realized they weren't properly lined up with the runway, Hersman said.

"Between 500 and 200 feet, they had a lateral deviation and they were low. They were trying to correct at that point," she said.

At 200 feet and another automated altitude call out, the airspeed had slowed to 118 knots ? well below the target level.

At this point, U.S. pilots would typically call for an aborted landing because the plane was more than 5 knots below its target speed, Collins said. But at no point in between 500 and 100 feet does the voice recorder show the pilots making any comment related to airspeed, Hersman said at a briefing Thursday.

Hersman said at earlier briefings that it was not until 200 feet ? 16 seconds before impact ? that Lee Jeong-Min, the instructor pilot "recognized the auto-throttles were not maintaining speed."

At 125 feet and 112 knots, both throttles started moving forward, indicating more fuel was being sent to the engines to increase power and speed. That was eight seconds before impact. Even if the autothrottles weren't fully turned on, either of the pilots in the two front seats could reach down and manually push the throttle levers forward to increase power.

It was about this time that the cockpit voice recorder indicated the first officer ? the third pilot seating behind the front two pilots ? realized the plane was traveling too slowly and called for an increase in speed.

A second later, Lee Gang-kuk's yoke can be heard rattling violently on the voice recorder. This is the sound of a stick shaker going off, a piece of safety equipment that tells a pilot the plane is about to stall because it has slowed to a dangerous speed and lost lift.

When the pilots in the two front seats realized the plane was in trouble, they both reached for the throttle. Passengers heard a loud roar as the plane revved up in a last-minute attempt to abort the landing.

At three seconds before impact, the plane reached its slowest speed of 103 knots. Its engines were at 50 percent power and power was increasing. At this time, one of the pilots called for an aborted landing.

At one and a half seconds before impact, another of the pilots calls for an aborted landing.

At 11:28, with the airspeed up three knots, the landing gear, followed by the plane's tail, collided with the seawall just short of Runway 28 Left. The plane careened wildly before slamming down onto the tarmac and sliding about 1,000 feet. The tail was sheared off and three flight attendants seated in the back of the plane fell out. Rocks from the seawall and pieces of the mangled landing gear were strewn along the runway.

The NTSB's investigation is being followed closely by pilots in the U.S. and around the world. At one gathering of pilots in Dallas Wednesday night, the discussion centered on why the Asiana pilots didn't realize their low speed sooner. No one had an answer.

"There are a lot of very experienced airline pilots who are scratching their heads right now," Collins said.

Meanwhile, crews removing the plane's wreckage encountered smoke early Friday morning. The smoke was captured by KGO-TV cameras, and the news station said it occurred moments after crews used a sling to lift the fuselage.

Heat and friction generated while crews were cutting the fuselage of Asiana Flight 214 might be to blame for the smoke, airport spokesman Doug Yakel said.

He said fire trucks at the scene doused the smoke before it turned into a fire.

Yakel said the fuselage was cut into two pieces to make it easier to transport. Much of the wreckage has now been removed from the site.

Airport officials hope to re-open the runway by late Sunday. The closure has led to flight cancellations and delays.

Guy Robs Store of iPhones, Leaves His Samsung Galaxy

Sometimes reality can trump anything fiction has to offer. This is one of those times.

Police say a 25-year-old Virginia man broke into a wireless store and smashed a case that held several iPhones. Obviously, this wasn't one of the brightest ideas this man has had in his life (c'mon, has he not read about the low-cost iPhone that is supposed to be coming out soon?) Anyway, boom?the man was off with the iPhones in hand, the perfect theft. When cops responded to the alarm, they found the case of missing iPhones. But hidden under broken glass near the door, they found something new: a Samsung Galaxy. Hm?

So, this happened back in February. After looking through surveillance footage, the police got an idea of the thief's appearance and build, then they traced him using the subscription information on the Galaxy phone he left behind, and found out his name is?Travis Montgomery Snyder. Once they had a match, they arrested Snyder on Monday.?

Samsung saves the day. Justice served.

Joe Barton Intro's Internet Poker Freedom Act of 2013 | Online ...

July 12, 2013

joe-barton-online-poker-billRep. Joe Barton (R-TX) has introduced HR 2666, the Internet Poker Freedom Act of 2013. The bill (read it here) comes nearly two years to the day after the introduction of HR 2366, Barton?s previous attempt at passing online poker legislation that went nowhere. Will 2666 fare any better? Regardless of Barton?s use of ?freedom? as Tea Partier bait, will any self-respecting God-fearing moral conservative vote for legislation that contains the Number of the Beast on its cover page? Just for fun, let?s look past the fire, brimstone and all that freedom-loving goodness to see what?s under the hood?

As you might have gleaned from its title, Barton?s bill is expressly poker-only, unlike Rep. Peter King?s recent soup-to-nuts legislative effort. Barton?s 2666 contains many passages that could have been lifted wholesale from his previous bill, including the five-year prison terms for anyone who operates an online poker business without a US-issued license. However, Barton generously offers an exception for companies located outside the US that take wagers from players residing outside the US. (In a related development, Barton believes residents of other nations should not be required to stand rigidly at attention while the Star Spangled Banner is performed at the Super Bowl.)

Barton wants the Secretary of Commerce and the National Indian Gaming Commission to establish an Office of Internet Poker Oversight, which would be tasked with qualifying regulatory authorities to issue licenses to and monitor the activities of prospective operators. Individual states would be automatically included in the federal system unless they provide written notice of their intention to opt out, after which operators would be required to geo-block customers from those states. However, said blocking wouldn?t apply to players on lands belonging to federally recognized tribes, unless those tribes had also opted out.

DANIEL DAY LEWIS V. KEANU REEVES
Prospective licensees must have owned or controlled a casino with at least 500 slot machines or a qualified card room for a period of five years prior to submitting their application. Two years after the first licenses are issued, the feds may lessen the above restriction provided they alert the public as to their intentions and allow for a period of public comment.

As for the ?bad actor? prohibitions, anyone who?s ever been convicted of accepting online poker bets ?in felony violation of Federal or State law? is banned from applying for a license for five years after the first federal licenses are issued. Similar prohibitions apply to anyone who purchases online poker assets from any convicted individual. Also not eligible is anyone convicted of an offense punishable by one or more years in prison or anyone delinquent in payment of any federal or state taxes.

Licensees will be required to disclose the identifies of all other vendors, including affiliates, operators of poker ?skins? and anyone providing a licensee with trademarks or other intellectual property. If a regulatory authority cancels or rejects a license application and the licensee applies to another authority within the next 12 months, the feds will stick their beak in and review the application themselves.

DETAILS, SCHMETAILS
Licenses would be valid for five-year terms. License fees would be determined by the individual regulatory authorities, but Barton?s bill doesn?t establish an overarching tax rate. Licensees will have to locate their servers within the state or tribal lands from which their license was issued. Players would not be allowed to wager using their credit cards. Play would not be permitted via ?internet caf?? type establishments. Tribes would not need to renegotiate any tribal-state compact in order to participate in the federal online poker scheme.

The use of poker ?bots? is prohibited, as well as any ?electronic, electrical, or mechanical device or software or other program or tool which is designed, constructed, or programmed specifically for use in obtaining an advantage ? where such advantage is prohibited or otherwise violates the rules of play established by the licensee.? However, such devices would be permitted provided they are registered with the licensing authority.

BAD BAD BOYS
Operators who fail to apply for US-issued licenses will face fines of up to $1m per day along with the sum of all the bets they take from US residents during their unlicensed heyday. The feds would establish a list of all unlicensed online gambling operators ? along with their domain names and the identities of all their principals ? which would be updated every 60 days. Stakeholders including ?any affected sports organization? and ?any person directly harmed by unlicensed Internet gambling? would have the right to submit names for inclusion on the list of evildoers.

HEAR HEARING
Barton?s bill dropped just one day after news broke that a congressional Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety and Insurance will hold a hearing on ?The Expansion of Internet Gambling: Assessing Consumer Protection Concerns? on Wed., July 17 at 10am EST. The Committee is chaired by Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), while the ranking Republican is Nevada Sen. Dean Heller. Other Dems include California?s Barbara Boxer, while the GOP is bringing rookie senator and all-around nutjob Ted Cruz, once famously described by Sen. John McCain as a ?wacko bird.? Best bring popcorn.

Disused schools across Japan transformed into stylish accommodation

???

With a declining birth rate and depopulation in many rural areas, Japan is seeing an increase in the number of schools that are being forced to close. While this is undoubtedly all rather saddening, we?re getting reports that some of the elementary and junior high schools that have met their demise so far are being turned into a variety of new facilities. Find out how after the break.

Of the 400-500 schools that close down each year, around 70 percent see a complete reformation into something new. Uses include anything from welfare institutions and leisure facilities, all the way across to art museums. The uses are truly vast.

???

Toru Hatayama, who manages the public relations department that supports the renovation of closed schools, comments:

?Of the schools that get transformed, hands-on facilities where you can learn something new are really abundant. These are places that adults can enjoy too.?

When asked what his favorite facility was, Hatayama replied:

?It?s got to be the lodging facilities. If you feel like taking a trip somewhere, the reformed lodgings in Tochigi Prefecture named ?Kumanoki? are really beautiful. The place is also easily accessible from Tokyo by car. What?s fascinating about Kumanoki is that you have a spectacular view of the stars in the night sky. In the school yard there?s even a fully fledged astronomical observatory. It?s somewhere that really shouldn?t be overlooked.?

Hatayama admitted that another place worth checking out is ?Hadoru? in Kyoto. Hodoru is almost like a big multipurpose building, home to a number of different shops and exhibits. For example, there?s a gallery, carpenter?s shop and even a cafe. On the outside, it looks like something that wouldn?t be out of place in a remote mountainous region of Japan. But taking a peek inside, you are struck by how just well the wooden building has been modernized with a stylish interior. Here you can also learn how to make Japanese soba noodles or bread.??It?s a place where you?re guaranteed to have a lot of fun,? comments Hatayama.

Many visitors to the site find a wooden school building in present day Japan to be a little unusual and they?re drawn in by the nostalgia aspect of it all. Across the country, there are about 300 reformed schools hosting these types of facilities. Whether it be a place to host an event or somewhere just that little bit different to a typical hotel room, the practical uses of disused schools are quite striking.

Disused schools are being converted at a startling rate. Right now across Japan you?ll find buildings converted into:

  • Exercise facilities (802)
  • Community centers/museums (754)
  • Welfare/medical centers (337)
  • ?Hands-on? experience center (300)
  • Ministry and government offices (291)

It?s sad to hear that so many schools are being closed, but at least the buildings aren?t going to waste. Who knows, maybe one day we?ll see thousands of Japanese returning to the countryside and these buildings will be schools once again? For the time being, though, we?re sure they?re in safe hands.

Prouty cyclist supports own work on cancer research

HANOVER -- When Jack Hoopes does his pioneering research into battling breast cancer, his work is partially paid for with money from the fundraiser known as The Prouty.

Begun in 1982 as a 100-mile bike ride by a group of nurses at Dartmouth-Hitchcock's Norris Cotton Cancer Center in honor of longtime patient Audrey Prouty, the fundraiser now includes walking, rowing and golf activities, as well as cycling, with thousands of people generating an average of around $2.7 million a year.

This year's Prouty takes place this Friday and Saturday, with its signature event - The Prouty Ultimate, a 100-mile bike ride from Manchester to Hanover on Friday and another century ride on Saturday - spanning those two days.

A Cotton Center scientist and professor at Dartmouth College's Geisel School of Medicine and Thayer School of Engineering for 23 years, Hoopes is a longtime benificiary of The Prouty.

And he's one of its most dedicated participants.

Hoopes has been riding in Prouty cycling events for most of his years at Dartmouth, usually accompanied by a family member or two.

In the early years, daughter Mollie was a passenger, riding in a baby carrier while her parents - Jack and his wife, Vicki Scheidt, a Hanover veterinarian - did the peddling. These days, Mollie, now 19, peddles along with Dad in the Ultimate, an endurance test she first passed five years ago.

Of the more than 5,000 people who will participate in this year's Prouty, only about 100 will ride in the Ultimate. Once again, Jack and Mollie Hoopes will be among that select group.

A study is born

When the National Science Foundation formally recognized nanotechnology as a new field of research into cancer treatment, the National Health Institute made a handful of large grants available for such research. Excited about the concept, Jack Hoopes and a team of about 25 biologists, physicians, engineers and graduate students launched a study. But because the team lacked experience in nanotechnology, Hoopes said, the National Health Institute grants went elsewhere.

"But we did like the concept and thought it had a future in cancer research," he said.

So, in those early years, the research was bolstered by a few small grants, including one from the Friends of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center.

That support from the center's charitable arm gave their work credibility, Hoopes said. And in 2010, the National Cancer Institute named Norris Cotton a "Center of Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence," a designation that came with a $13 million grant.

That windfall - and the potentially lifesaving work that will come from it - would not have been possible without the early support of the Friends of Norris Cotton Cancer Center, Hoopes said.

And that support was made possible by The Prouty.

Passion for research

Hoopes studied veterinary medicine at Oklahoma State University. He enjoyed the research aspect of veterinary work so much, he decided to pursue a Ph.D. in radiology at the University of Colorado. It was there that he first worked on cancer research, and that prompted him to pursue another Ph.D., in radiation oncology at Duke University.

He's been in cancer research at Dartmouth since completing that degree.

Hoopes' work focuses on injecting mice with human breast cancer cells then treating them through nanotechnology. He and his team create antibodies containing nanoparticles of iron oxide and inject those into the mice to attack the cancer cells. Next, each mouse is placed in a non-toxic magnetic field, which is then activated. The magnetic field activates the iron oxide particles, which heat and destroy the cancer cells, Hoopes explained.

The process has been successful with the mice, he said, as well as with several local dogs with naturally occurring cancers that have participated in the study. Regarding the treatment's application in humans, Hoopes said it probably would be done in conjunction with chemotherapy and radiation, but might be used alone, as it has been with the mice and dogs.

The theory, he said, is that the procedure could target specific cancer cells, even when they have spread to other parts of the body or metastasized.

And that, he added, is very exciting.

Kick start for the ride

Before setting out on the Ultimate from St. Anselm College in Goffstown on Friday morning, Hoopes will discuss his work as the keynote speaker during the Ultimate Dinner for The Prouty at the college Thursday night.

Guests will learn about nanotechnology and cancer research and about how The Prouty funds not only that research but also transportation and other support services for Norris Cotton Cancer Center patients.

Soon after, it will be time to hit the road, scientist and daughter peddling off to Hanover to help pay for his life's work.

Mohamed ElBaradei to be named Egypt's interim prime minister

After days of violent demonstrations following the overthrow of Egypt's President Morsi, for a time today, one of his chief critics, Mohamed ElBaradei, was named the interim prime minister, in a move that would have given the generals who ousted Morsi new credibility with the West. But then the offer was withdrawn. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

By Ian Johnston and Charlene Gubash, NBC News

Egypt's interim president has backed away from an announcement Saturday that pro-reform leader Mohamed ElBaradei would be appointed as the country's interim prime minister, news agencies reported.

Ahmed el-Musilamani, a?spokesman for President Adly Mansour said consultations were continuing, denying that ElBaradei's appointment was ever certain following the ouster of President Mohammed Morsi, according to The Associated Press.

Mansour, chairman of the supreme constitutional court, who was sworn in as interim president Thursday.

Egypt?s National Salvation Front announced earlier in the day that former United Nations nuclear agency chief ElBaradei was scheduled to take his oath of office at 8 p.m. local time on Saturday.

According to a source familiar with the Obama administration's thinking, the administration would be willing to work with El Baradei if he is named Egypt's interim prime minister. The administration would also encourage ElBaradei to put an end to the violence, the source told NBC News.?

Secretary of State John Kerry also stressed in a statement that the United States wants to see Egypt's civilian transition succeed, and that the United States will do all it can to help encourage that effort.

Meanwhile, supporters of the deposed Morsi again gathered in large numbers Saturday, a day after clashes with security forces and anti-Morsi protesters left 36 dead and more than 1,000 injured.

A Muslim Brotherhood statement said that the movement?s leader Mohamed Badie ? who appeared at a rally on Friday after his arrest was ordered earlier in the week ? was calling for people to ?remain in the public squares of every governorate and every city until power is restored to him [Morsi] as the rightful ruler of Egypt.?

Hitha Prabhakar joins MSNBC's Alex Witt to break down the 3 Big Money Headlines. She mentions that oil analysts are watching the situation in Egypt and they are saying how it will negatively impact gas prices. She discussed the jobs numbers that came out on Friday and explains what hedge fund manager Ron Baron meant when he talked about the Dow reaching 60,000.

?God is great. He can crush every traitor and every treacherous tyrant. The people of Egypt will protect the Revolution, and will continue to demand their rights," Badie said, according to the statement.

On Friday, thousands of Morsi's Islamist supporters marched across a central Cairo bridge in the direction of Tahrir Square, which was also occupied by thousands of protesters whose demonstrations prompted the army to depose Morsi.

The Morsi supporters ended up dispersing after a clash involving a hail of stones, fireworks and sometimes gunfire. There were also clashes in other parts of the country, including Alexandria and the Sinai Peninsula, a hotbed for Islamist militants.

Mohammed Sultan, deputy head of the national ambulance service, told the AP that at least 36 people were killed in Friday's clashes, the highest death toll in one day since the latest outbreak of protests began last Sunday. Another 1,076 were injured.

Amid calls from leaders for both sides to remain peaceful, there are fears the conflict could become increasingly violent.

A new Islamist militant group calling itself Ansar al-Shariah in Egypt announced its formation amid the chaos.

For hours, there was no security in sight as the fighting ensued. Guns, stones and even fireworks were used as weapons but Morsi's supporters were driven back by the anti-Morsi demonstrators, and the military. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

The group said it would gather arms and start training its members, in a statement posted on an online forum for militants in the country's Sinai region on Friday and recorded by the SITE Monitoring organization, Reuters reported.

The group blamed the events on secularists, Egyptian Coptic Christians, state security forces and army commanders, who they said would turn the country into ?a crusader, secular freak.?

It denounced democracy and said it would instead champion Islamic law, or sharia, acquire weapons and train to allow Muslims to "deter the attackers, preserve the religion and empower the sharia of the Lord," SITE reported.

Egypt?s military has been at pains to stress its takeover of power was not a military coup, but an expression of the will of the people as shown by the anti-Morsi protests.

This is key as it would threaten more than $1 billion in annual military aid given by the U.S.

Hassan Ammar / AP

Days of massive protests and a military ultimatum forced the country's first democratically elected president from office.

U.S. law prohibits financial assistance to any country whose elected head of state is deposed in a military coup.

Speaking in Prescott, Arizona, Friday Senator John McCain said the aid should be suspended.

?I say that with great reluctance, but the United States of America I think must learn the lessons of history and that is: We cannot stand by without acting in cases where freely elected governments are unseated by the military arm of those nations,? he said.

McCain also called on the Egyptian military to set a timetable for elections and a new constitution.

?Then we should evaluate whether to continue the aid or not,? he said. ?I am aware that by suspending aid to the Egyptian military, which is the only stable institution in Egypt, we are risking further problems in the Sinai, and in other areas of cooperation with the Egyptian military.?

NBC News' Becky Bratu and Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
