One of the joys I get from woodworking, is following in my father's footsteps as it were. When I was growing up, my Dad had a shop, as did his father, and all of my uncles on my Dad's side of the family, and most of the uncles on my Mom's side... And it didn't stop there, the woodworking gene goes back as far as family records go, from the first settlers building their homes, and furnishings, along with throwing their own sweat equity in to the homes, barns and furnishings of their neighbors.

I remember Christmas mornings, among the boxes of factory made things, there ware always wooden toys. A toy truck, a Biplane, one of those tethered paddle ball things... And our home, I remember the coffee table we had in our living room, while it was made before I was born, I remember hearing stories of how my dad made that. The end tables, and night stands. These were all things made by my Dad's hands.

Some of my Dads woodworking from back then was out of necessity. Dad is a world class bargain hunter, and doubtless every last tool in his shop was second hand, and most likely from estate sales where the original owners heirs had no idea what they had or the value of it. And access to lumber for him was a bit easier due to proximity to family owned property, and a great uncle with a sawmill...

This is part of my family legacy, and in turn, a small part of American culture that I want to keep alive and well.

God willing, I will have sons and daughters of my own to pass the traditions down to. But barring that, I do what I can to keep this tradition alive, and keep this vital piece of American Culture healthy, and vibrant. I don't know when I will feel I have been successful at this. Because for me it is equally important to keep the craft and the tradition alive as it is to actually make something of lasting value.

Am I alone in this perspective? Do many of you have long standing family traditions of woodworking? If so let us know about it!

If you are blessed enough to have children, and / or grand children, does your love of woodworking have any influence on this Xbox generation? Are you succeeding in passing on woodworking as your family tradition?

I admire your family history. To have a craft that ties a family together must be nice. All my immediate family members were craft oriented, but not entirely in woodworking. My father was blessed with a natural talent with woodworking, and did his best to offer me opportunities and guidance. It wasn't his vocation.

So, I must say, that I'm the lone ranger, and whatever I have achieved that could be passed down will die with me. Maybe sharing what I can on forums might get passed down/around, so all is not really lost.

Much like Cabinetman, my folks were all Plumbers on my dad's side of the family (16 all together). All thru high school I wanted to take "shop" classes, but was always told "no take another math class, it'll come in handy when you start in the trade". So I had never had a shop class not so much as auto mechanics class.

I got married and started my own Family in 1977, in 1978 I decided I needed to do something to make more money and landed a job at a manufacturing facility running a metal lathe.

Today I?ve been a married for 34 years, I?ve worked as a machinist / shop supervisor for the last 33 years, started doing real woodworking about 10 years ago. Needless to say I didn?t follow in the plumbing line. The extra math has helped over the years, and I know enough about plumbing to not have to call one.

As for the passing of the WW tradition, I?ve passed the love of woodworking to my kids (both girls) and my sons-in-laws. I?ve been blessed with two grandsons this year and Lord willing I?ll be around long enough to pass it down to them. Thanks for asking this stirred up a few tucked away memories.

While I didn't inherit (directly anyway) my love of woodworking from my father, I did get his handiness with tools. Dad is a retired auto mechanic. His father was a baker. So again no direct transfer there.

Well, due to health issues, and radically downsizing his place, Dad got out of the craft years ago. A sad thing if you ask me... I am a bit shocked at the responses so far. But then again, it is all in perspective. I grew up with woodworking, and the arts being a huge part of my family. Pretty much everyone in the family is artistically inclined. Although not all are woodworkers. And even my in laws, are artistic people.

In the family we've got musicians (singers, drummers, bass players, guitarists, pianists etc...), auto mechanics (custom car, and truck builders), painters, sculptors, graphic artists, upholsterers, jewelers, glass blowers, and other various crafts or trades aside from just woodworking. So yeah, there is a huge family bent here.

Last year, I unfortunately had to go to Ohio for my sister in laws untimely funeral. While up there visiting with family, we took a drive to visit my great aunt, who is 90 years old now. I recall family visits to their home for the holidays as a boy, there was always some wooden doo dad that one of my great uncles, my grandfather, or my dad made up there for us kids to play with. The toy box shaped, and painted to look like a 1960s Volkswagen Microbus. Not hippified, but a bus none the less. When we were up there, the toy box was long gone, but there was still this rube goldberg type falling marble toy that was still there. And years after my great uncle's passing, the shop is still there, and although no longer in use, still smells of saw dust...

I guess for me, working where I do, and living in an almost urban environment, I wonder if what I thought was normal, really was the exception to the rule. I mean on my block, with the exception of the next door neighbors, all of the kids I knew growing up, their dads had a shop of some sort or another in the basement, or the garage... I see so little of that now, and among the folks I work with.... well so few of them know which end of hammer to hold on to...

There are things that define a culture, the way we treat each other, our beliefs, and what we chose to surround ourselves with. Architecture, art, furnishings, music. I would hate to see the things that make the American culture so great, simply disappear into shelves crammed with particle board garbage at Ikea.

Sadly, I think that far too many people are interested in the immediate gratification of our disposable particle board society. Need a chest of drawers? $99.00 at WalMart or Ikea. Who cares if it only lasts a couple of years and will end up in a land fill when the particle board fails? Who cares that there is no warmth, or connection with family history there. It's just there to hold up your shorts anyway right?

I am far from expert on woodworking, and produce far less than I would like to. But I will say this, I have pieces spread around the family now, that Lord willing, if there are generations yet to come, well maybe my grandchildren can hear the stories of how this or that was made by Grandpa Dave... I can hope and pray...

My dad did not have the time or interest in doing things with his hands. He was a great dad though. Loved him. I still think that I should call him but don't have the number for heaven.

I learned woodworking when we had a house that was too small for our family and we couldn't afford to buy a bigger one. So my neighbor and I cut the roof off our house and threw it in the back yard. Neither of us had done anything like that but once the roof was off, you are pretty well committed, We had checked out a Time Life book from the library for directions. It took us six weeks of working every night till we started cutting all of the wood wrong and every weekend till we couldn't walk anymore. Twenty some years later it is still standing.

I used the tools we bought to start making toys for my kids and then for craft sales to make a little extra money.

Then I started making furniture for us. Two of my three boys inherited my love of making sawdust. But surprisingly my daughter in law married to the son who doesn't love the smell of sawdust, has become a woodworker in her own right.

I hope my kids want the furniture I have made and the tools I have gathered up over the years when I can't use them any more.

MonitorDaily - News ? Engine Lease Finance to Acquire ...

Engine Lease Finance said it entered into an agreement with Macquarie to acquire 47 aircraft engine assets. Upon completion of the transaction, ELFC?s owned and managed portfolio will include close to 300 modern aircraft engines.

The transaction will also extend ELFC?s existing customer base to more than 80 airlines and maintenance, repair and overhaul companies. Subject to the necessary consents, ELFC will also assume the servicing of a portfolio of seven additional engines owned by a third party, which will further enhance ELFC?s substantial portfolio of managed assets.

ELFC president and CEO Jon Sharp said, ?The acquisition of these engines allows ELFC to immediately enhance our near-term strategies for growth. We continue to pursue revenue and portfolio growth through sale and leaseback transactions, engine order positions and other portfolio opportunities in line with our strategic business objectives. We are also pleased to note the continued and substantial support ELFC enjoys from our parent companies.

Castrodale: Money for nothing ... truly

It's hard to stomach seeing pro athletes get megamillions for being basically worthless

Image: Carl Crawford, Mike NapoliAP

Carl Crawford, right, has been a dud for the Red Sox since they signed him in the offseason.

OPINION

updated 2:29 p.m. ET Sept. 27, 2011

Jelisa Castrodale

One of the many over-referenced Babe Ruth anecdotes involves a reporter who flips the pages of his notebook toward Ruth while asking about his $80,000 contract with the New York Yankees. "You?re making more than President Hoover," the man supposedly exclaims, as his eyebrows brushed the bottom of his fedora. ?Why not?? Ruth replies, ?I had a better year.?

If you adjust Ruth?s 1930 numbers for inflation, he?d be pulling in $1,085,245 today, which is about what the 2011 Yankees deposit in the bank account of relief pitcher Boone Logan. The House That Ruth Built still pays better than the House That John Adams Built; our current president?s salary is less than the league minimums for MLB, the NBA and the NHL. But whether you think Mr. Obama ($400,000) has had a better year than, say Astros third baseman Jimmy Paredes ($415,000) probably depends on which consonant ? D or R ? is stamped on your voter registration card.

The idea that even the most marginally talented pro athlete can pull a six-, seven- or even eight-digit salary isn?t new or noteworthy. There aren?t many people who?d be surprised to learn that their own net worth is less than Dwight Freeney?s french fries budget ? and there are even fewer who still have the potential to get outraged about it. Those numbers won't get smaller, not when bigger deals are being signed, like the 8-year, $120 million contract extension Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald inked in August.

But sometimes trying to digest those numbers is harder than swallowing a lump of store-brand potato soup, especially when those of us who don?t play games for a living constantly have to worry about job security or a 9 percent unemployment rate or whether we should?ve splurged on that bonus pack of paper towels. Last year, U.S. per capita income was $39,945, slightly less than Fitzgerald made in the first two minutes of the Cardinals-Seahawks game Sunday.

Is he worth it? In the NFL?s whacked-out economic universe, yes. But I don?t get angry over the contracts of perennial Pro Bowlers such as Fitzgerald or All-Stars such as Kobe Bryant or Alex Rodriguez. I can?t handle all those dollars given to players who either consistently underperform ? whose stat lines shrink as their bank accounts get supersized ? or the players who stuff their lockers with Costco-sized boxes of Crazy. You know, like these guys:

MLB: Neither John Lackey nor Carl Crawford can take all the blame for the Red Sox's collapsing like discount dry wall. But when you?re being paid almost $16 million and $15 million respectively, you expect more than an 9.13 ERA and .250 batting average (.250 OBP) in the final month of the season.

Carl Crawford was plucked out of Tampa after a Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, All-Star season.? Now, after six months in Boston, he?s struggled through the worst year of his career, has apologized to the fans and is trying to convince everyone (including himself) he can be "the Carl Crawford that I know I am."?

Good luck, buddy. I?ve looked more like that Carl Crawford than he has. If he?d played like this last season in Tampa, the Yankees might not have pretended to be interested in him and the Sox might not have taken the bait. The first of Crawford's seven years in Boston started with a .155 average, peaked at .304 in May and has remained below his career marks in the other decimal-pointed categories.

Meanwhile, Lackey is 26-23 in two seasons and still has the worst ERA in the league. He?s lashed out at the media, at unsolicited text messages and at pretty much everything else except his own inconsistent right arm.???

Better investments: Between their two salaries, you could buy almost 239,000 copies of the Red Sox 2004 World Series collectors edition DVD set, which could be distributed to a full third of Boston?s population. Those six discs could be the closest any Sox player will get to the postseason and NO I DIDN?T CRY MYSELF TO SLEEP LAST NIGHT, THANK YOU FOR ASKING. Their combined $31 million would also be enough to keep 48,665 people fully Paxil-ed for the seven-month stretch between now and next April.

In the National League, the fifth-place Chicago Cubs must wish they?d kept receipts for both Alfonso Soriano and Crazyface Zambrano. Soriano's eight-year, $165 million deal was the largest in franchise history, but he hasn?t helped the Cubs erase 103 years of franchise futility.? His numbers have steadily declined every season since 2006 ? the year before he signed with the Cubs ? and, despite a stack of HRs that year, he never has reached the potential he showed with the Yankees in 2002-03.

Carlos Zambrano should return his $18,875,000 to the Cubs, especially after he quit on his team, then literally did quit the team (before changing his mind) following a Chernobyl-level meltdown Aug. 12. He was placed on the team?s disqualified list immediately afterward.

Could anyone else act like that at work and not expect to immediately start Tetris-ing their personal possessions in a cardboard box before being escorted out of the building??

What?s being lost is that Zambrano used to be ? and still could be ? a well above-average pitcher. Unfortunately, he?s pretty much slammed his accomplishments and reputation against the water cooler too many times.

Better investments: The budget for Ferris Bueller?s Day Off was a middling $5.8 million.? Zambrano should pay to re-shoot it three times over, casting no one but the voices in his head (and maybe the Original Cameron).

NFL: We?re less than a quarter into the season, so it?s hard to make snap judgments other than LOL MATT CASSEL LOL. After three straight losses, three touchdowns against five interceptions and a 65.5 passer rating, the Chiefs QB could find himself on the sidelines, recast as a $12 million paperweight.

Other than Cassel, one of my fave underachievers is San Francisco?s Alex Smith. He?s playing on a one-year, $5 million contract ? slightly less than Matt Hasselbeck, slightly more than Ryan Fitzpatrick ? but if the 49ers gave him more than a bag of gummy worms and a coupon for a free oil change, it would be too much.?

As the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2005, Smith was signed to a six-year, $45 million deal that was eventually renegotiated twice. The Niners have gotten zero on their investment: zero winning seasons and zero playoff appearances. The last time they played past Week 16 in the Jeff Garcia era in 2002.

After 57 games of a career punctuated with shoulder injuries and benchings, Smith has 53 TDs, 54 INTs and a 57 percent completion rate. He spent most of this year?s lockout-shortened training camp competing for the starting spot, which is an annual occurrence in San Francisco, right up there with the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival and washing your skinny jeans.?

Better investments: With $5 million, Smith could send 55,555 people to a Bay Area Red Cross CPR class, in the hopes that one of them would learn how to resuscitate his career. Or he could give $8 in meal money to each of the estimated 600,000 people who will attend Hardly Strictly this weekend. There they?ll see Merle Haggard, the only thing in San Francisco that looks more lifeless than Smith?s throwing arm.?

NBA: Right now, the season looks almost as unlikely as Kobe Bryant learning Turkish so we'll look at last season's numbers, where one of the biggest, dumbest contracts belonged (and still belongs) to Orlando?s Gilbert Arenas. Arenas was the NBA?s eighth highest-paid player last season at $17,730,694 despite averaging 10.8 points per game on 36 percent shooting.

This season ? if they actually suit up ? he?ll make more than Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki and, no, that won?t make more sense if you read that sentence a second time.

In 2010-'11, Arenas split his season between the Washington Wizards and the Magic, where he started two games and played the other 47 behind Jameer Nelson. The NBA?s measure of effectiveness is PER (Player Efficiency Rating) which tries to "sum up all a player's positive accomplishments, subtracts the negative accomplishments, and returns a per-minute rating of a player's performance."

The league average is 15; LeBron James led with 27.34, while Arenas limped to an anemic 10.2, putting him between luminaries Willie Green and Alonzo Gee.

Better investments: ?Paying Chicago?s Derrick Rose ($6,993,707) to take his place. Or he could open 38 new Hallmark stores, ensuring that he had enough "Thank You" cards for Rashard Lewis and the Washington Wizards. That $118 million deal is the only thing that looks dumber than his own.

And Gilbert, if you have a few bucks left would you send it my way? I'm really getting sick of store-brand soup.

Makau breaks world record in Berlin Marathon | The World News ...

BERLIN (AP) ? Patrick Makau of Kenya broke the world record to win the Berlin Marathon on Sunday.

By Michael Sohn, AP

Patrick Makau celebrates after setting a world record while winning the Berlin Marathon on Sunday.

Makau pulled away after 27 kilometers (16.8 miles) and finished in 2 hours, 3 minutes, 38 seconds.

Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia, who held the previous record of 2:03.59, pulled up after Makau?s breakaway and seemed on the verge of giving up when he stopped running and bent over, but resumed the race.

For several kilometers (miles) he was second, about two minutes behind Makau, but appeared to have finally given up before the finish.

Gebrselassie had won four successive Berlin marathons from 2006 and set his world record in 2008.

Makau also won last year?s race in driving rain. Sunday?s race on Berlin?s flat course took place in sunny, mild conditions.

The 26-year-old Makau brandished a Kenyan flag after coming through the landmark Brandenburg Gate and crossing the finish line.

?I was hoping to gain a lot of experience but not to win,? he said. ?Today maybe a new generation is starting in marathon.

?My body was not good in the morning but I had no problems in the race, I did everything well.?

By the 35th kilometer (22nd mile) , Makau was alone in front.

He and Gebrselassie had stayed together until the 27th kilometer (16.8 mile) and were easily on world record pace from the start.

Gebrselassie, 38, pulled out of the New York City Marathon in November with a knee injury and retired immediately after the race. But he changed his mind eight days later.

He injured both knees when he fell during a training run in the rugged countryside of his homeland but came back to win a half-marathon in April in Vienna, Austria. He also won the 10,000-meter (10,940-yard) Great Manchester Run in May.

Stephen Kwelio Chemplany, a pacemaker from Kenya, finished second in 2:07.55, and another Kenyan, Edwin Kimaiyo, was third in 2:09.50.

Florence Kiplagat of Kenya won the women?s race in 2:19.44, ahead of Irina Mikitenko of Germany and world record holder Paula Radcliffe of Britain, who was making her Berlin debut.

Mikitenko clocked 2:22.18 and Radcliffe finished in 2.23.46.

Hope for new approach in euro crisis buoys markets

(AP) ? Hopes that European leaders will consider new ways to fight the debt crisis, including a contained Greek default, reassured investors on Monday, though analysts said more specifics will have to emerge before a rally gains traction.

Over the weekend, European officials said Germany and other rich EU countries are pushing for a new strategy to the debt crisis, which is threatening to take down the eurozone's larger economies.

One proposal on the table is to ask banks and other private institutions that hold Greek bonds to take a far bigger loss on those holdings, slashing Athens' debt. Many observers have said Greece will not manage to pay down its debt even after taking into account the reduction agreed in July.

The new strategy could also see the firepower of the continent's euro440 billion ($590 billion) bailout fund multiplied several times.

It's not clear if these proposals will gain support but the fact that they were being considered spurred stock markets in Europe after a week of disastrous losses.

By early afternoon, France's CAC-40 was up 2.2 percent at 2,871, while the DAX in Germany rose 2.3 percent to 5,318. The FTSE index of leading British shares was 0.9 percent higher at 5,113.02.

Wall Street was drawing comfort from the new plans, though less than the European bourses. Dow futures edged up 0.4 percent to 10,744, while the broader S&P futures were up 0.7 percent to 1,138.

"For now at least, it looks as if markets are giving some credence to a firm plan on how to tackle the debt crisis beginning to emerge," said Ben Critchley, a sales trader with IG Index. "But if recent experience is anything to go by, this patience is unlikely to last too long if details are not forthcoming."

In fact, the optimism was not extending to the euro, which has been battered by the continent's debt problems and fears that the currency itself could collapse. It was trading 0.5 percent lower at $1.3453.

Oil, too, was lower, indicating that concerns about the overall health of the global economy remain. Benchmark oil was down 67 cents to $79.18. Brent crude was down 13 cents to $103.84.

Asia followed that trend as well.

South Korea's Kospi fell 2.6 percent to end at 1,652.71 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 1.5 percent to 17,407.80. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 receded 1 percent to 3,863.90.

Mainland China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index dropped 1.6 percent to 2,393.18 ? its lowest close in 14 months. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index lost 1.6 percent to 1,043.47. Shares in gold and insurance companies weakened.

If you own a Illinois vehicle with a warranty, beware! Many dealers and manufacturers suggest that you need to get your maintenance services at a dealership in order to keep your warranty. A federal law, called the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, prohibits a manufacturer from voiding your warranty just because you got parts or services from a non-dealer. In fact, a manufacturer can?t require you to use their brand of oil filters, lubricant, or any other part in order to maintain your warranty protection. This protection is true for aftermarket extended warranties purchased on new or used vehicles. This protection also applies to leased vehicles. There are similar laws in Canada as well.

If a manufacturer can prove that the replacement parts or service lead to a vehicle failure, they can void a portion of the warranty. Of course, Sterling Automotive Repair uses quality parts and fluids that meet or exceed manufacturers? specifications. (See http://www.sterlingautomotiverepair.com/?page_id=55.) A lot of people do not know that service centers subscribe to data services that tell them exactly which parts and fluids meet manufacturers? specifications. These services are updated constantly so that your Naperville automotive service center always knows what you need for your car. You can be assured that your vehicle will receive high quality replacement parts that?ll keep you safely on the road.

Proper maintenance is so important to safety. It can also prevent costly repairs and save you money over the long haul. Just because you don?t have to go to a dealer to get your maintenance service performed doesn?t mean that you don?t need to have it done at all. In fact, some protections from your warranty require that scheduled maintenance be performed. If you miss having important work done, you may lose some warranty coverage. Refer to your owners? manual and vehicle warranty for more details. And keep good records of the work you?ve had done.

The protection you receive under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act can save you hundreds of dollars each year. The average hourly labor rate for service is nearly twenty percent lower at independent service centers such as Sterling Automotive Repair. We are conveniently located at 9 S. Route 59 in Aurora. So why go anywhere else?

Obama stumps for jobs bill in GOP leaders' turf (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama is marketing his massive jobs proposal from an outdated bridge that links the home states of his two chief congressional Republican rivals, a symbolic and cheeky maneuver designed to apply pressure on the GOP and convey resolve in the face of a sputtering economy.

Obama will make his pitch Thursday for $447 billion in tax cuts, jobless aid and public works projects at the Brent Spence Bridge south of Cincinnati, an aging span that connects House Speaker John Boehner's state of Ohio with Kentucky, home of Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell. The politics are clear.

"The point here is that it's not an accident that we're headed to that area," said White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer.

Strategically, the visit serves Obama's legislative and political goals. The president is making his jobs bill the focus of his fall agenda amid broad public disapproval over his handling of the economy. The trip also raises Obama's profile in Ohio, a state that he won in 2008 but that George W. Bush also won twice.

Public opinion polls show only about 1 in 4 people approves of Obama's economic performance. The president is seeking to put his differences with Republicans into sharper relief and shift to them some of the responsibility for the nation's high unemployment and feeble economic growth.

"All across those states there are roads, bridges, schools that unemployed construction workers could be building right now if the Republican leaders in Congress were willing to work with the president and the Democrats to do something that would create jobs in the economy," Pfeiffer said.

The bridge itself, deemed "functionally obsolete" by the federal government, is already scheduled to be replaced. It is part of a major north-south artery that officials estimate carries 4 percent of the nation's gross domestic product annually.

Pending environmental analyses and acquisition of rights of way mean construction won't begin until 2015.

McConnell and Boehner, both of whom have supported the bridge project, dismissed the visit as a ploy.

"President Obama may think the best way to distract people from the challenges we face is to stand near a bridge in a swing state and pit one group of Americans against another and hope his critics look bad if they don't go along with him," McConnell said on the Senate floor. "But I don't think he's fooling anybody."

Added Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck, "We want to work with the president to support job creation, but political stunts and empty promises bring us no closer to finding common ground."

Obama's visit comes a day after the House rejected a measure providing $3.7 billion for disaster relief as part of a bill to keep the government running through mid-November, raising the possibility of another confrontation over a government shutdown.

The 230-195 defeat came at the hands of Democrats and tea party Republicans. The White House sided with Democrats and welcomed the outcome of the vote.

The president's defiant approach to Boehner and McConnell represents a shift from his outreach to Boehner this summer, when the two men tried to work out a deal that would extend the nation's borrowing authority and cut long-term deficits as well.

Then, the president took Boehner golfing. Now he's taking him to task.

Obama on Monday announced a $3 trillion deficit-reduction package, half of which consists of tax increases. It was a direct challenge to Republicans and Boehner in particular, who last week flatly ruled out tax increases as way to lower long-term deficits.

"The speaker says we can't have it `my way or the highway,'" Obama said Monday. "And then basically says, my way ? or the highway. That's not smart. It's not right. "

Obama's visit will be his second to Ohio in two weeks. Vice President Joe Biden has already been to the state twice this month.

It's not the first time the president has taken on Boehner in his home state. A year ago, Obama went to Parma, Ohio, just days after Boehner had delivered an economic speech to the City Club of Cleveland. Obama criticized the speaker by name for his policy proposals.
