By now you?ve probably got your fictional crushes and fictional best friends all picked out. But what about fictional pets? These creatures are not only more interesting than your average parakeet or hamster, they?re also smart, loyal, and good in tough situations (like defeating evil and saving the world). Oh, and adorable. Adorable is always good.
1. Rufus (from Kim Possible)
What is it? A male naked mole rat
Why is he on here? Naked mole rats are gross-looking and useless. Well, not Rufus! Thanks to the wonder that is animation, Rufus is adorable! He can talk a little, knows when Ron and Kim are in trouble, and has super powers. And? He loves cheese.
2. Appa (from Avatar: The Last Airbender)
What is it? A male flying bison
Pffft, that?s not even a real animal! Your point? None of the animals in the ATLAverse exist in real life (except for Bosco), but that doesn?t mean they?re not cool. Appa is especially cool because, in addition to being cute and smart, he also flies, and you can ride him! Plus he?s incredibly loyal to Aang, is a great judge of character, and knows when he?s not needed.
3. Hedwig (from Harry Potter)
What is it? A snowy owl
Well, at least snowy owls are real. But I?m pretty sure it?s illegal to make them your pets. Not if you?re a wizard, it?s not! And Hedwig isn?t just any owl: she?s a magic letter-delivering owl. She?s also very smart, and can track down anyone, anywhere in the world. She?s Harry?s link to the magical world where he?s accepted and loved, which makes her basically a pet.
4. Buttercup (from The Hunger Games series)
What is it? A yellowish, ugly cat, possibly female
Oooh, two real animals in a row, you?re on a roll. But who cares about a dumb cat? Buttercup, like Hedwig, is an important literary device in addition to being a pet. You can?t tell me you didn?t get a little twinge in your heart when Buttercup showed up at Katniss?s house after the war ended, having literally trekked across the country in search of Prim. I think it?s safe to say that Buttercup is one of a very small number of cats in the world that actually loves their owner enough to do that.
5. Crookshanks (Harry Potter again)
What is it? A half-cat, half-kneazle that is yellowish, ugly, and large
Back to the fake creatures then, are ya? Let?s hear about why this thing is so great. Crookshanks is so great because despite what Ron thinks, he?s very useful. Being part kneazle means Crookshanks is much smarter than your average cat, which is why he?s able to help Sirius.
6. Bovril (from the Leviathan series)
What is it? A perspicacious loris.
*facepalm* Another made-up animal? Not just made up, fabricated! Bovril is one of many new species created by the Darwinists in Scott Westerfeld?s wonderful steampunk series. He?s basically a big chipmunk/squirrel thing that talks and is smart. Bovril is the perfect combination of adorable and useful.
7. Beethoven (from the Beethoven movies)
What is it? A rambunctious male Saint Bernard
Yay! Back to the real animals! Don?t get too comfortable. But yes, Beethoven is a real animal, and he?s on here because he gets into all kinds of hilarious scrapes while teaching important lessons about the importance of family and the value of friendship and?paper training? It?s been a while since I watched a Beethoven movie.
8. Momo (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
What?s a Momo? A flying lemur
And? Momo is not only smart and loyal, he?s hilarious. He lends comic relief to serious situations, and he?s the shoulder Aang leans on when no one else will understand.
9. Toothless (from How to Train Your Dragon)
This is a dragon, isn?t it? Not just any dragon, a Night Fury!
Aren?t dragons usually the bad guys in those nerdy fantasies you watch? Yes, and they start out that way, but change over the course of the movie. In addition to being about the cuddliest dragon alive, Toothless helps Hiccup to learn that it?s okay to be himself. As corny as that sounds, it?s a lesson we could all stand to learn.
10. Dug (from Up)
Isn?t Doug a person name? Yes, but ?Dug? isn?t: he?s cute, light brown dog.
I love dogs, tell me about this one. Doug?s master made him a collar that allows him to talk. He even tells jokes! Dug is brave enough to leave his pack to help out, and along the way he somehow becomes the alpha dog?but leaves it all behind because he loves Carl and Russell, even though he just met them.
11. Snoopy
Stop right there, Snoopy needs no introduction. Seconded.
