Read What Facebook?s Sandberg Calls Maybe ?The Most important Document Ever To Come Out Of The Valley?

generic_2_genericFacebook’s No. 2 top dog, COO Sheryl Sandberg, recently said that Netflix’s company culture document “may well be the most important document ever to come out of the Valley.” The document, a bullet-point-happy PowerPoint, has become a cultural manifesto for the Internet’s economic epicenter, amassing over 3.2 million views on Slideshare.net. More than simply a management guide, it’s a window into a philosophy that thrives on uncertainty, creativity, and trust — a blinding contrast to the hierarchical culture that dominated much of the 20th century workplace. To the extent that innovation and the Internet play a role in the modern workplace, it is a crystal ball into the future of daily life. We’ve summarized the most telling principals below: Creativity is Most Important In procedural work, the best are 2x better than the average. In creative/inventive work, the best are 10x. The technology industry, especially, is haunted by the ever-present fear of obsolescence. As Internet bandwidth speeds rapidly increased, Netflix had to figure out how to retrofit its entire DVD delivery service into a video streaming service that satisfies demand for instantaneous video. The next big transformation in video and Internet capability is an unknown, and creative solutions to up-and-coming problems are nearly priceless. The consequences for stunted innovation could not be greater: One of Microsoft’s flagship products, Office, got eaten alive by Google’s free office suite, Google Docs, after the company failed to follow users where they are now spending their time (the Internet). Prioritize Discovery Over Job Security Many people love our culture, and stay a long time. They thrive on excellence and candor and change….Some people, however, value job security over performance, and don?t like our culture. Politically, this principal is the most fascinating: no major Internet company has a union, despite consistently ranking as some of the best places to work. Creative enterprises have been able to replace the long-cherished values of worker compensation and stability with a challenging, enjoyable environment. “Risk” is an often-praised characteristic of tech founders, who are now asking their employees to jump down that same rabbit hole. The future of work is likely to be as insecure as it is unforgivable. For some, this is utopia…for others, not so much. Poor Employee Behavior Is Caused By Misunderstanding Managers: When one of your talented people does something dumb, don?t blame them. Instead, ask yourself what context you failed to set. High performance

'Cabaret' cast reunites for 40th anniversary

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

The big-screen musical "Cabaret" dominated the 1973 Academy Awards with 10 nominations and 8 wins, including best actress for Liza Minnelli, best supporting actor for Joel Grey and the best director Oscar for Bob Fosse. For fans of the flim, those accolades came as no surprise. According to the stars, it was more of a surprise that the movie was ever made.

The racy story of an unconventional love-triangle set in a pre-war German nightclub wasn't exactly box-office safe, as castmembers Minnelli, Grey, Michael York and Marisa Berenson recalled during a Wednesday morning reunion on TODAY.

"I could hear people whispering, 'Well, how are we going to advertise it? The nifty Nazi follies?'" Minnelli remembered.

After all, the film didn't exactly make for lighthearted fare.

"I would say that?s it's probably darker than it is light," Grey said. "The entire idea of this film and the story is dark, and the fact that we get a laugh or two here or there is like gold."

Especially during a time when much of the subject matter wasn't mainstream material -- such as the fact the men in the love-triangle at the center of the story were pursuing each other, as well as Minnelli's character.

"It was (a) very repressed (time)," York explained. "People didn't talk about it, certainly not in the movies. This gentleman (my character) was bisexual. Now, of course, it seems so harmless. ? This was groundbreaking. I think everyone would agree Fosse ? this extraordinary man had a vision."

Vision and freedom -- Minnelli said the studio "left Bob Fosse alone and that was one of the best things they could have done."

But Fosse didn't have quite as much freedom as he would have liked. The risqu? film would have been far more revealing where Minnelli's Sally Bowles was concerned had the director fully had his way.

"He was provocative from the get-go," the actress recalled. "He said, 'Well, how do you feel about exposing yourself? I said, 'How do you feel about exposing yourself?' We started to laugh. ? I said, 'I don't think it's necessary, do you?' He said, 'I sort of want to. Let me think about it.' And then he didn't do it, which was wonderful.

See more from the reunited cast in the clip above, and then watch them in their "Cabaret" heyday on Feb. 5, when a restored version of the film is released on Blu-ray and DVD.

(AP) ? Amy Poehler is working on a book that appears to be a little bit of everything.

The star of "Parks and Recreation" and former "Saturday Night Live" performer has an agreement with It Books for an "illustrated, non-linear diary" with stories both true and invented.

Jokes, candor and life lessons are promised. It Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, announced Monday that the book is currently untitled and scheduled for 2014.

It's the first book for Poehler, who recently hosted the Golden Globes ceremony with Tina Fey, her good friend and author of the million-selling "Bossypants."

DIY Cr?me Fra?che Adds a Creamy Kick to Sauces, Desserts, and Scrambled Eggs

DIY Crème Fraîche Adds a Creamy Kick to Sauces, Desserts, and Scrambled EggsCr?me fra?che, a cultured heavy cream, is a staple in French cuisine, and is often used in many sauces since unlike many dairy products it does curdle when heated. It is less sour and thicker than U.S.-style sour cream.

European labelling regulations don't allow any ingredients other than cream and bacterial cultures to be used in authentic cr?me fra?che, but if you're fresh out of bacterial cultures you can add two tablespoons of organic yogurt or buttermilk to one cup of heavy cream and leave it out for 12-24 hours until it reaches the desired consistency. This recipe comes from culinary weblog Blue Kale Road and was used as a topping for a Chocolate Espresso Souffle but cr?me fra?che is also used in chef Gordan Ramsay's famous scrambled egg recipe that we've previously covered.

Don't forget to refrigerate your cr?me fra?che after it is ready?it'll keep up to a month that way.

'Fruitvale,' 'Blood Brothers' win at Sundance

By Reuters

PARK CITY, Utah -- Drama film "Fruitvale" and documentary "Blood Brothers" won the top awards at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday, giving them a big boost to reach independent movie audiences this year.

George Frey / EPA

Director Ryan Coogler wins the audience award for dramatic film for "Fruitvale" at the awards ceremony at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, on Jan. 26.

"Fruitvale," starring Octavia Spencer and Michael B. Jordan and directed by 26-year-old, first-time filmmaker Ryan Coogler," picked up the U.S. drama jury and audience awards for its "moral and social urgency."

The film is based on the true story of 22-year-old Oscar Grant, who was killed by police in Oakland, Calif., on New Year's Eve in 2008 and whose death sparked riots against police brutality. Movie studio The Weinstein Company purchased distribution rights for the film.

"This film had a profound impact on the audience that saw it ... this award goes out to my home in the Bay Area where Oscar Grant breathed, slept, loved, had fun and survived for 22 years," Coogler said in his acceptance speech.

Oscar-winning documentarian Davis Guggenheim awarded the U.S. documentary jury prize to "Blood Brothers," saying it shook the voting panel to their core.

The documentary follows an American man who moves to Africa and works with children suffering from HIV at an orphanage, and through his work, the children gain a voice.

Director Steve Hoover accepts the award for best documentary for the film "Blood Brothers" at the Sundance Film Festival.

"It is so encouraging for the kids ... their lives are so encouraging, and they die and no one remembers their name ... To take their story so that everyone sees it, it's so awesome," director Steve Hoover said."

Young actress Shailene Woodley, praised for her performance in "The Descendants" last year, and her co-star Miles Teller won the Special Jury acting prize in "The Spectacular Now."

Actress Lake Bell, who made her directorial debut in the U.S. drama category with quirky comedy "In A World," picked up the drama screenwriting award.

Hosted by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who premiered his raunchy directorial debut "Don Jon's Addiction" this year, the Sundance Film Festival Awards pick winners at the top gathering for independent movies made outside of Hollywood's major studios.

"Sundance is a community of people of filmmakers and film lovers who all believe together that there's more to movies than glitz and glamour and money and the box office. In Hollywood, you can feel like a freak if you talk about movies as art, and here, you don't have that," Gordon-Levitt said.

World cinema winners
The Sundance Film Festival, now in its 35th year, is backed by Robert Redford's Sundance Institute. The 10-day gathering of the independent film industry is held in snowy Park City, Utah.

In previous years, films that win the top prizes at the Sundance Film Festival often go on to achieve Hollywood awards success as well.

Last year, mythological drama "Beasts of the Southern Wild" won the top prize at Sundance and is now nominated for four Oscars in major categories.

The award winners are voted for by special juries of industry professionals and by the audience for the audience favorite awards.

In the world cinema categories, South Korean drama "Jiseul" picked up the grand jury drama prize. The film, directed by Muel O, follows the residents of a small town who were forced to hide in a cave for 60 days after the military attacked their village.

Cambodian documentary "A River Changes Course," about three young Cambodians struggling with adversity in a country ravaged by war and debt, picked up the world cinema grand jury award.

"Events like these really bring our communities together to share in the beauty of the world and the beauty of our future," director Kalyanee Mam said.

"Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer," which follows the story of three members of a Russian feminist punk band jailed for performing a "punk prayer" in a Russian Orthodox church, picked up special jury prize in the world documentary category.

Co-director Mike Lerner said the three members of the band had "started a feminist revolution that we hope will continue around the world."

Bar codes on Brazil sidewalks give tourist info

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? Rio de Janeiro is mixing technology with tradition to provide tourists information about the city by embedding bar codes into the black and white mosaic sidewalks that are a symbol of the city.

The first two-dimensional bar codes, or QR codes, as they're known, were installed Friday at Arpoador, a massive boulder that rises at the end of Ipanema beach. The image was built into the sidewalk with the same black and white stones that decorate sidewalks around town with mosaics of waves, fish and abstract images.

The launch attracted onlookers, who downloaded an application to their smartphones or tablets and photographed the icon. The app read the code and they were then taken to a web site that gave them information in Portuguese, Spanish or English, and a map of the area.

They learned, for example, that Arpoador gets big waves, making it a hot spot for surfing and giving the 500-meter beach nearby the name of "Praia do Diabo," or Devil's Beach. They could also find out that the rock is called Arpoador because fishermen once harpooned whales off the shore.

The city plans to install 30 of these QR codes at beaches, vistas, and historic sites, so Rio's approximately 2 million foreign visitors can learn about the city as they walk around.

"If you add the number of Brazilian tourists, this tool has a great potential to be useful," said Marcos Correa Bento, head of the city's conservation and public works.

Raul Oliveira Neto, a 24-year-old visitor from the Southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, was one of the first to use the icon and thought the service fit well with the way people live now.

"We use so much technology to pass information, this makes sense," he said, noting he'd seen QR codes on tourist sites in Portugal, where they were first used for this purpose. "It's the way we do things nowadays."

Locals ? used to giving visitors directions ? also approved the novelty.

"Look, there's a little map; it even shows you where we are," said Diego Fortunato, 25, as he pulled up information.

"Rio doesn't always have information for those who don't know the city," he said. "It's something the city needs, that it's been lacking."

UN humanitarian chief in Syria for talks

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? The United Nations humanitarian chief was in Damascus on Sunday for talks with Syrian officials about the nation's conflict, which has forced millions of people from their homes, destroyed the country's cities and created food and fuel shortages.

Valerie Amos did not make any public remarks upon her arrival in Damascus on Sunday for a two-day visit, but at the World Economic Forum in Davos last week, she said world powers had not done enough to lessen Syrian suffering.

"The humanitarian situation in Syria is already catastrophic and it's clearly getting worse," she said. "What we are seeing now are the consequences of the failure of the international community to unite to resolve the crisis."

The U.N. says more than 60,000 people have been killed since the start of the conflict in March 2011.

Living conditions have deteriorated across Syria during the 22-month conflict, which began with political protests that escalated into a civil war with scores of rebel groups battling President Bashar Assad's forces. Entire towns and neighborhoods have been damaged in the fighting, and more than 2 million people are internally displaced, with another 650,000 seeking refuge in neighboring countries.

Some areas face food shortages, and even areas that have been spared large-scale violence like Damascus lack sufficient quantities of gasoline, heating oil and cooking gas.

On Friday, the U.N. announced it was preparing to send $10 million in new U.S. aid to help alleviate hunger in northern Syria.

World powers remain divided on how to solve the crisis. The U.S. and many Arab and European countries have called on Assad to step down, while Russia, China and Iran refuse any pressure from outside that seeks to hasten the regime's fall.

On Saturday, Iran made its strongest warning to date that it could intervene militarily to help Assad's regime.

As quoted by the semiofficial Mehr news agency, an aide to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Syria held a key position among a group of Middle Eastern powers opposed to U.S. and Israeli influence in the region.

"Syria plays a very key role in supporting or, God forbid, destabilizing the resistance front," said Ali Akbar Velayati. "For this same reason, (an) attack on Syria is considered (an) attack on Iran and Iran's allies."

Iran is Syria's strongest ally in the Middle East, and has provided Assad's government with military and political backing for years. In September, the top commander of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, said the elite unit had high-level advisers in Syria. Iran also is believed to be sending weapons and money to Syria.

A senior Israeli Cabinet minister warned on Sunday that Israeli could attack sites in Syria if Assad's regime transferred chemical weapons to the Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon.

Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom confirmed to Israel's Army Radio that top security officials held a special meeting last week to discuss Syria's chemical weapons arsenal.

"It would be crossing a line that would demand a different approach, including even action," he said. Asked whether this might mean a pre-emptive attack, he said: "We will have to make the decisions."

Also on Sunday, Syria announced that it would drop legal proceedings against opposition figures who returned to the country to participate in a "national dialogue" called for by Assad during a recent speech.

Syria's Higher Judicial Council announced the decision in a statement carried by the state news agency. The report gave no further details.

Assad proposed the national dialogue as part of his plan to end the country's crisis as laid out in a high-profile speech this month at the Damascus Opera House.

In the same speech, however, he vowed to keep fighting and referred the opposition as criminals and terrorists ? making it unlikely anyone will take their chances on the amnesty offer.

Tens of thousands of activists, their family members and opposition supporters remain jailed by the regime, according to international rights groups.

Opposition leaders have repeatedly rejected any talks that include Assad, insisting he must step down.

Violence continued around Syria on Sunday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported clashes and government airstrikes in neighborhoods east and south of Damascus as well as elsewhere. At least seven people died in attacks in the suburbs, and three others died after a shell landed in the city's southern Yarmouk district.

The group, which relies on contacts throughout Syria, also reported clashes near a train station in southwestern Qadam neighborhood where four rebel fighters and one woman were killed.

Friar accused of abuse in 2 states kills self

(AP) ? A Franciscan friar accused of sexually abusing students at Catholic high schools in Ohio and Pennsylvania killed himself at a western Pennsylvania monastery, police said Saturday.

Brother Stephen Baker, 62, was found dead of self-inflicted wounds at the St. Bernardine Monastery in Hollidaysburg on Saturday morning, Blair Township Police Chief Roger White told the Associated Press. He declined to specify the type of wounds or say whether a note was found.

Baker was named in legal settlements last week involving 11 men who alleged that he sexually abused them at a Catholic high school in northeast Ohio three decades ago. The undisclosed financial settlements announced Jan. 16 involved his contact with students at John F. Kennedy High School in Warren, Ohio from 1986-90.

The Youngstown diocese previously said it was unaware of the allegations until nearly 20 years after the alleged abuse.

"Let us continue to pray for all victims of abuse, for Brother Baker's family and the repose of his soul," Youngstown Bishop George Murray said in a statement Saturday.

After the settlements were announced, the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese in central Pennsylvania said it received complaints in 2011 of possible abuse by Baker at Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown, about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Bishop McCort High School hired an attorney to investigate after several former students alleged they were molested by Baker in the 1990s. Attorney Susan Williams said three former students had talked to her in detail about the alleged abuse.

Baker taught and coached at John F. Kennedy High School in the late 1980's and early 1990's and was at Bishop McCort from 1992-2000.

Bishop Mark Bartchak of the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese said in a statement that he was saddened by the news of Baker's death, but declined further comment citing pending legal action involving the diocese.

A message left for Father Patrick Quinn, the head of Baker's order, the Third Order Regular Franciscans, was not immediately returned.

Judy Jones, assistant Midwest director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, said the organization still hopes people who know about other abuse allegations against Baker will continue to come forward.

"We feel sad for Br. Baker's family but even sadder for the dozens of boys who Baker assaulted," she said in a statement.

How to kick butt at customer service

Build lifelong interpersonal skills in retail positions

First published in?jobpostings magazine
careers. education. ideas. all of it.

?I saved Christmas.?

And no, that ain?t an exaggeration. That?s a direct quote from Dean Cumming, a product placement coordinator with The Home Depot Canada. He isn?t talking about the time he foiled the Grinch?he?s referring to a time when, in a customer service role, he went above and beyond the call of duty.

?It was Christmas eve, and there was a wonderful elderly woman who needed a stove delivered immediately,? he says. ?But our regular delivery guys couldn?t get it to her that soon. So we had it delivered to the store, and myself and a manager installed it that day, so she could prepare Christmas dinner for her family.?

//
//

Heartwarming, right? But there?s a lesson to be learned here: awesome customer service can be a game-changer. Yet the basis of great customer service?the type that The Home Depot Canada says is their cornerstone?can be devastatingly simple. In fact, great customer service boils down to one action: Listening.

?It?s about developing solutions that you?d appreciate as a customer,? adds Amber Knight, a kitchen designer. ?They key is to listen to what people are asking you, and be honest?no one would expect you to know everything. Then, people start opening up to you. They treat you more like a friend than a staff member.?

And customer-service skills can take you way, way beyond the sales floor. Both Cumming and Knight, who?ve worked with the company for two and eight years respectively, now coordinate orders, handle office administration and take on public relations duties?in short, they?re working in managerial-esque positions. And that should tell you two things: First, at places like The Home Depot Canada, retail jobs can bloom into larger roles. Second, learning customer service skills can benefit you in the long-term.

How, you ask? Simply add? these four career-enhancing (and potentially Christmas-saving) skills to your r?sum?.

1. Professional skills.

Or, in other words, people skills. ?When someone?s spending $30,000, they want to feel like they?re not just handing money over to some juvenile person that doesn?t know what they?re doing,? says Knight.

So, along with being knowledgeable at her job, Knight says she learned world-class presentation and teamwork skills with The Home Depot Canada. ?I?ve always been personable, and being pleasant is important. But I?ve learned to conduct myself in a professional manner, and use the staff here, or our vendors, as resources. If I don?t know an answer, I can rely on them.?

?Building rapport is really important,? says Cumming. ?A lot of customers will come in here saying, ?I need a tool to somehow do this.? A big part of customer service is understanding what people want to accomplish?whether it?s installing a bathtub or building a deck?and then focusing an entire project. Take the time to know your customers, and work them through the entire process.?

2. Organizational skills

Working at The Home Depot Canada requires plenty of skills: you?ll have to learn about plenty of products. Answer questions from customers. Manage large-scale projects. In short, you?ll have your plate fulland you?ll learn to prioritize your tasks. Plus, prioritizing is a huge part of multi-tasking (a skill that just about every job asks for).

3. Communications skills.

At places like The Home Depot Canada, great service equals great communication, and that means being transparent with customers, co-workers, and bosses?a trait that?s beneficial, no matter your role in a company. ?If I don?t have an answer, I call and let customers know I?m working on it. A big thing is keeping those lines of communication open, so people don?t feel like they?re being ignored.?

4. Persuasiveness

Don?t underrate the power of persuasion. Sure, it?ll net you a sale, but your negotiation abilities will also help you while writing cover letters, interviewing for a job, or negotiating that pay raise. And, says Cumming, you can learn plenty about persuasion when dealing with tough customers?in fact, converting grumpy customers can be the most rewarding part about customer service positions.

?The most satisfying part about customer service is working with difficult customers,? he says. ?Working with people who are difficult, and having them return to you, is the greatest challenge?and a challenge is what you should strive for. Most customer service people won?t be able to deal with these people?but you?ll develop the strongest bonds with them.?

WATCH: Osborne - not for turning on the economy

Today 1) Growth figures to be released.? And Osborne's not for turning as he snubs IMF plea to ease austerity...

Osborne as Thatcher"The Chancellor insisted he will plough ahead with spending cuts until 2017. The IMF?s chief economist Olivier Blanchard had called for the UK to slow down its austerity programme. But speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Mr Osborne said: ?I don?t think it is right to abandon a credible deficit plan.?? ?We do have to carry on with the cuts,? he said. ?We?re not about to bring that programme to an end. It will go on until 2017. We are walking a difficult road but we are going in the right direction.? - Daily Express

...But the Curse of Clegg strikes again as LibDem leader agonises over Coalition policy in haplessly-timed House Magazine interview

"Mistakes have been made over the economy by the Coalition, Deputy PM Nick Clegg dramatically said last night. He risked a huge row with Chancellor George Osborne by admitting the Government should have spent MORE on big building projects to boost jobs. The Lib Dem leader?s startling honesty is terrible timing for the Treasury as it braces itself for a fresh dose of grim tidings today" - The Sun

> Yesterday: ToryDiary - Fraser Nelson is right ? the Tories should stop saying that they?re paying down Britain?s debts

Today 2) Same-sex marriage bill to be published.? "The most divisive vote of Cameron's leadership."

Gay Tory logo"The issue threatens to shatter the Tory unity that Mr Cameron engendered with his Europe speech this week. MPs have warned party whips that the issue of gay marriage is by far the most toxic for them among grassroots party members. The Times has spoken this week to MPs from all parts of the country, all of whom have reported that local association members are deserting the party over the issue. Opposition to gay marriage had dominated their postbags and was driving members to UKIP, the MPs said." - The Times (?)

Today 3) Ruth Davidson to distance Scottish Tories from English party

Ruth Davidson"She will say the Conservatives are unfairly characterised as controlled by Westminster, and they need to prove to voters ?beyond all reasonable doubt? they put Scotland first. Although many people north of the Border continue to share Tory values, she will argue the party?s hostile attitude to devolution has meant they are perceived as ?a brake on the aspirations of Scotland and not a torch bearer?. Senior sources close to Ms Davidson said she had not yet decided to cross the constitutional ?line in the sand? she promised to draw during her successful leadership campaign in 2011." - Daily Telegraph

No early poll bounce for Cameron's EU speech

"The first YouGov poll since the Prime Minister's speech, the?fieldwork for which was conducted between 5pm on Tuesday and 5pm yesterday, shows no sign of an early boost for the Tories. Instead, support for Labour has risen by two points to 43 per cent, while the Tories are unchanged on 31 per cent. We will, of course, need to wait until the weekend polls for a clear picture of what effect, if any, Cameron's speech has had on the Conservatives' standing." - The New Statesman

  • Populus poll finds that Britons would vote to quit the EU. "The poll also shows that the Prime Minister?s landmark speech on Tuesday did little to improve his chances of an outright Tory victory at the next election in 2015" - The Times (?)

The Prime Minister meets Merkel in Davos.? She doesn't mention his speech during hers...

Cameron and merkel
"Cameron held a 20-minute meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to discuss his plan to negotiate a new deal for Britain. She had indicated a ?fair compromise? could be possible to allow the UK to loosen ties. He also met other EU premiers including Italy?s Mario Monti and Enda Kenny of Ireland. Mr Cameron made a passionate defence of his referendum plan in a speech to the Forum. He said: ?This is not about turning our backs on Europe ? quite the opposite." - Daily Express

...But Clegg suggests EU referendum wouldn't hold up a second Coalition...

"Nick Clegg, Britain?s deputy prime minister, said Mr Cameron?s proposals for a renegotiation were ?vague? and it was ?wholly implausible? that a future Conservative government could rewrite the rules to the sole advantage of the UK. However the pro-European Liberal Democrat leader did not rule out the possibility that he would back Mr Cameron?s call for an in-out referendum, if the 2015 general election propels his party back into a second coalition with Mr Cameron?s Tories." - Financial Times (?)

...Though Boris concedes it could split the Conservatives...

Boris Johnson smiling"Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, put a question mark over whether he would support continued EU membership in the referendum. ?I can?t say now,? he told an interviewer at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. ?But my overwhelming instinct would be that we can get sufficient changes, reforms and improvements to the treaty to make it sensible, for most people in my country to vote to stay in the single market.? - The Times (?)

...And meanwhile, Miliband has EU troubles of his own

Paul Goodman: Cameron's speech was a gamble to get the Euro-sceptic monkey off his back

"So why has this cautious politician, naturally restrained in temperament and outlook, taken such an extraordinary gamble, risking the very unity and future of his party? There is no great mystery about the answer. It is the only way he can think of to get the eurosceptic monkey off his back. Almost half his backbenchers voted for an EU referendum last year. Leading economic indicators point to quicker growth

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A gauge of future U.S. economic activity rose in December, pointing to an improvement in growth despite an ongoing political fight in Washington over fiscal policy.

The private Conference Board said on Thursday its Leading Economic Index gained 0.5 percent to 93.9 last month, after being unchanged in November.

A drop in new claims for jobless benefits helped drive the gain, as did an increase in new building permits.

"A pickup in domestic growth is now more likely," said Ken Goldstein, an economist at the Conference Board.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected the index to gain 0.3 percent.

The Conference Board had previously said its leading index fell 0.2 percent in November, but on Thursday it revised the reading.

Many economists have worried that a debate in Washington over taxes and government spending - which was particularly raucous in December - would lead businesses and consumers to hold back on spending, hurting the economy.

The Conference Board's index, however, suggested the economy was picking up speed despite ongoing uncertainty over fiscal policy.

S&P 500 passes 1,500 for first time since 2007

2 hrs.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index traded above 1,500 for the first time since December 12,?2007 following a sudden drop in claims for unemployment benefits, another sign that the labor market is healing.???

The index has not closed at 1,500 since Dec. 10, 2007, just months before the implosion of big Wall Street banks would send the major averages crashing to decade lows.

While many traders usually dismiss the big, round market?numbers as having little meaning from a fundamental or technical standpoint, eclipsing this mark could be different.?

"It's psychological more than anything," said Justin Wiggs, vice president of trading at Stifel Nicolaus. "If we stay above 1,500 it could bring some incremental dollars off the sidelines."

The move past 1,500 comes as investors have been showing more confidence in stocks, finally taking some of the $2.7 trillion lying dormant in low-yielding money market funds and pumping it into equities.

"To the degree that those are sticky investments and those dollars stay in equities, that will be a trend we'll be watching here in the first quarter," Wiggs said.

Market veteran Art Cashin, the floor operations manager for UBS, said the mark could be significant as the "bulls need a breakout punch like S&P through 1500."?

The market's stubborn march higher despite the array of factors against it - weak earnings, political tensions in Washington and a European recession to name three - have market bears feeling fairly helpless.

"This is a very frustrating market," said Kathy Boyle, president of Chapin Hill Advisors. "It's times like this when I feel like throwing in the towel. That's when I feel like I should stick to my guns."?

The Nasdaq fell about?two?points to 3,151.75. A 10 percent drop in Apple, the country's most valuable company, was enough to pull the technology-heavy index lower. Apple is the largest component of the Nasdaq, making up 9.9 percent of the index.?

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 97.93 points at 13,877.26 just before midday.?

The Labor Department reported that the number of Americans applying for unemployment aid fell last week to the lowest since January 2008. Applications dropped 5,000 to 330,000. The four-week average also hit a five-year low.?

Microsoft and Starbucks are scheduled to report after the closing bell.?

Wayne Gretzky?s $14.9 million estate on the market

5 hrs.

1072 Newbern Ct, Thousand Oaks, CA 91361
For sale: $14.995 million

It makes sense that "The Great One" would have a great house.

Wayne Gretzky's custom estate, which is currently listed for sale, is situated in Thousand Oaks on 6.5 acres within the gated Sherwood Country Club -- an exclusive secured community that is?home to several people seeking privacy, including Britney Spears.

"The privacy of the property and community is a major draw for celebrity buyers," explained listing agent Joyce Rey of Coldwell Banker Previews International."The location is superb, with the Pacific Coast and famed Malibu only a short 20-minute drive, and only 35 miles from Los Angeles."

The home was built by Wayne Gretzky and architect Richard Landry. Landry, commonly referred to as the "architect to the stars," has worked with other big names to design custom homes, including Mark Wahlberg,?Tom Brady and Gisele B?ndchen, and Sylvester Stallone.

Gretzky's home measures 10,815 square feet, but that doesn't include square footage of the two detached guest houses, one of which has a full gym. A circular motor court leads to the front entrance of the home, where the grand entry opens to dark wood floors and white walls with intricate plaster detailing. An open floor plan connects the gourmet kitchen with the family room. The home has six bedrooms, 7.5 bathrooms, as well as a home theater room, state-of-the-art surveillance and security systems, a wood-burning pizza oven, pool and sunken tennis court.

Built in 2002, the home has already had a large renovation, in which the master his-and-her baths were completely redone and the kitchen was expanded and remodeled and opened up to the family room. New floors, landscaping, new brick patios were added and the pool and tennis courts were both resurfaced.

See more of the home with a two-minute?video tour with Joyce Rey.

Calculated with current mortgage rates, the monthly payment on Gretzky's home would be $52,464 with a 30-year-fixed-rate mortgage.

Whitney Houston's mother wonders if she could have saved singer

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Whitney Houston's mother has told People magazine that she questions her skills as a parent and wonders if she could have saved her superstar daughter from the drug use that played a role in her death.

"Was I a good mother?" Cissy Houston, 79, was quoted as telling the celebrity magazine in an advance excerpt released on Wednesday from the magazine's Friday edition.

"I still wonder if I could have saved her somehow. But there's no book written on how to be a parent. You do the best you can."

Whitney Houston drowned accidentally in a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub on February 11, 2012, after taking cocaine and after a well-chronicled battle with drug addiction. She was 48.

Cissy Houston, a singer in her own right, talked to People about her daughter's personal life and career while promoting her upcoming memoir, "Remembering Whitney."

In the memoir, Cissy Houston says she was not aware of the early "partying" days of her daughter, known to the family as "Nippy."

"I had no idea about Nippy's 'partying.' And the truth is, back then I didn't really want to know about it," she writes, according to excerpts released to People.

Cissy Houston also discussed her daughter's ex-husband Bobby Brown, who has had his own substance abuse problems and run-ins with the law. "He didn't help her, that's for damn sure," Houston told the celebrity magazine of Brown.

The Grammy-winning singer left behind her only child, Bobbi Kristina, 19, who was hospitalized twice with anxiety after her mother's death.

Last fall, Cissy, Bobbi Kristina, the singer's brother and sister-in-law starred in a 14-episode reality show for cable channel Lifetime about their struggle to cope after Houston's death called "The Houstons: On Our Own."

Houston told the magazine she was "worried" about granddaughter Bobbi Kristina and "trying to make sure she doesn't (follow the same path)" as her famous mother.

Cissy Houston's interview with People, and excerpts from her memoir, can be found in the issue which reaches newsstands on January 25.

Stocks gain on economic indicators, US earnings

PARIS (AP) ? Europe's stock markets were broadly higher Thursday amid signs the continent's services and manufacturing slump was easing.

Shares creeped higher as investors welcomed surveys showing a smaller than forecast contraction in both manufacturing and services in the 17-country eurozone this month. That came after overnight data showing a pickup in China's factory production as well as strong tech earnings that spurred Wall Street to rally to a five-year high.

Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.3 percent to 6,214.89. Germany's DAX gained 0.1 percent to 7,711.67 and France's CAC-40 rose 0.2 percent to 3,733.78.

Wall Street appeared headed for a day of muted trading, with Dow Jones industrial futures barely changed at 13,722 while S&P 500 futures fell 0.2 percent to 1,488.

Markets shrugged off news from Germany's banking sector, where Commerzbank said it planned as many as 6,000 job cuts over the next three years. The country's second-largest bank, which was bailed out by the government in 2009, expects to cut between 4,000 and 6,000 jobs by 2016.

Grim employment data in Spain also failed to dent markets optimism. Spain's unemployment rate shot up to a record 26.02 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012, leaving almost 6 million Spaniards out of work, the country's statistics agency said.

Stock markets in Asia were boosted from HSBC Bank's preliminary survey on China's monthly manufacturing. Its index rose to a two-year high of 51.9 in January from 51.5 in December. A reading above 50 indicates expansion on a scale of 100.

Analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said before the survey's release that they expected China to beat estimates. "Manufacturing sentiment should have been boosted by previous fiscal measures and optimism towards the new government" following the once in a decade leadership change late last year, the bank said in an email.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 1.3 percent to close at 10,620.87. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 advanced 0.5 percent to 4,810.20, its highest close since May 2011. Benchmarks in Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines also rose.

Investors were encouraged by developments in Washington, where the U.S. House of Representatives voted to avert the imminent threat of a government default by suspending the debt limit ? the amount of money the government is allowed to borrow.

The law requires that Congress approve raising the amount the government can borrow to pay its obligations as the debt exceeds its limit, currently at $16.4 trillion. That's the cumulative amount the country owes as a result of routinely spending more than it collects in taxes.

On Wednesday, IBM single-handedly lifted the Dow Jones industrial average to a five-year high. The tech giant's quarterly earnings beat Wall Street's expectations, thanks to its lucrative Internet-based "cloud" computing business and sales of software services.

Benchmark oil for January was up 37 cents to $95.60 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Wednesday the contract dropped $1.45, or 1.5 percent, to finish at $95.23 per barrel, the first decline of more than 1 percent since Dec. 21.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3323 from $1.3321 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar rose to 89.5890 yen from 88.66 yen.
