On Tuesday, Dec. 18, the Clear Falls baseball players spread the holiday cheer and worked to better the community when they delivered Christmas presents to three local families in need.
The baseball teams gave Christmas to three families this year, one more than last. For the project, the class divided into groups, one per family. In each group, a student leader was put in charge to inform the group on the needs of the families, collect money for gifts and lead the group on a shopping trip to buy the presents.
The families chosen were identified by head boys? baseball coach Eddie Youngblood and principals of local elementary schools, because they were families who were probably unable to provide a Christmas.
This year, the three families chosen included a combined fourteen to fifteen children.
?The parts leading up to delivering the gifts, like shopping and gift wrapping, were a bit challenging but enjoyable,? said Sam Hurley, a junior baseball player. ?It?s always nice to know you are doing a service for another.
For my family all of the children were under 7 years old so they had their own wish list of favorite dolls or toys they wanted. The girls got Barbie and Dora dolls and some extra clothes, and the boy said he liked Ironman and Spiderman so we found him a mask and a ?web? shooter.? Along with the toys we shopped for some nightwear and clothing for each child and shoes to match their outfits. The shopping is a great time to be with all the guys and hang out while doing something meaningful and potentially life changing. ?
While bringing the boys of the Clear Falls baseball program together, ?A Home Run for the Holidays? gave families that may not have had a Christmas a fabulous one.
?When we delivered the gifts the kids and mom were stunned,? Hurley said. ?We weren?t surprising them or anything, but they still had this silent joyous look on their faces. Then as we all gathered and dropped the gifts off, the kids became really excited and we talked with them for a few minutes. The mom was very grateful and appreciative for what we did and they all thanked us before we left. ?
But the baseball boys weren?t the only ones to participate in the service project. In conjunction with the team, the Diamond Darlings, a spirit team of girls who support baseball, helped provide gifts for the whole family and the single mothers of each.
?Last year, I was in a group that delivered to a Spanish speaking woman who didn?t speak any English. Even though we couldn?t understand what she was saying at first (we had a student translator), you could hear the emotion in her voice,? Hurley said. ?We were there talking with her for over an hour and we learned that without us, there most likely wouldn?t have been a Christmas at her house. She was so thankful and hugged all fifteen of us while giving us the biggest smile.?
The project, which led to team bonding through service, shopping and gift-wrapping, was an opportunity for Clear Falls baseball to give back to the community that has blessed and supported them for the past three years.
