For venture investing, will 2012 look more like 2008 than 2011? (poll ...

Will 2012 be a continuation of the good, bubble-like times for the venture capital industry and startups that are raising money? Or will we see a dramatic, economic-doldrums-induced slowdown like we did at the end of 2008?

Erick Schonfeld of TechCrunch has raised these interesting questions in a post that recalls the R.I.P. Good Times slide deck that Sequoia Capital produced in 2008 as it was predicting disastrous times for startups and advising those startups to batten down the hatches and get ready for a long dry spell.

Schonfeld quoted Josh Kopelman of First Round Capital. Kopelman (pictured right), warned, ?I think 2012 will look more like 2008 than 2011.? Kopelman and others said the froth of the last 18 months is coming to an end. The number of seed fundings is exceeding the number of Series A fundings, which could result in a crunch for companies seeking Series A fundings.

The economy looks fairly weak, unemployment is at 9 percent, and in a survey released today, about 44 percent of Silicon Valley residents feel like they are not participating in an economic recovery. The latter report comes from the Survey and Policy Research Institute, which polled 458 Silicon Valley adults from Oct. 18 to Nov. 12, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Only 35 percent of valley residents said that they felt an improvement in their own lives from an economic recovery, according to the Silicon Valley Pulse survey. What?s your own view of whether the startup fundraising environment is improving or getting worse? Please take our poll.

Libya displays Roman treasures looted by Gaddafi troops (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi stole ancient Roman artifacts when they fled Tripoli, bundled them into sacks and planned to sell them abroad, Libya's new rulers said on Saturday as they displayed the haul for the first time since its recovery.

The artifacts -- a collection of 17 stone heads, most the size of tennis balls, and terracotta fragments dating from the second or third centuries A.D. -- were recovered on August 23 when anti-Gaddafi fighters intercepted a convoy of loyalists heading south from Tripoli.

"All of them (the artifacts) date back to Roman times but with very strong local influence," said Saleh Algabe, director of the Antiquities Department in the new Libyan government.

"They were captured in cars belonging to Gaddafi militia which shows they were probably planning to smuggle them out of the country to fund their fight," against the new Libyan leadership, Algabe told a news conference.

The carved stone heads in the collection appear to have been detached from statues. A section of a tile with what looked like an image of a dog decorated on it was also displayed.

The items were shown in public for the first time on Saturday at a ceremony when the government's security committee handed them over to the antiquities department.

"It (the collection) is important because it is very rare," said Algabe." These pieces confirm the contribution of the Libyan people to early human civilization."

Libya was home to thriving Roman outposts beginning around the first century A.D. One Roman emperor, Septimius Severus, was born in Leptis Magna, on the site of the modern Libyan town of Khoms. He turned his hometown into a model Roman city and large parts of it are still intact.

FLIGHT FROM TRIPOLI

Officials said they were not sure if the items were stolen from a state institution because specialists were still conducting an inventory of government-owned antiquities.

Mustafa Terjuman, a security official with Libya's interim leadership, said the haul was recovered on the day anti-Gaddafi rebels marched into Tripoli, forcing most loyalist troops to flee.

"The revolutionaries found a unit of Gaddafi soldiers on the airport road (leading south out of Tripoli)," said Terjuman.

"There was a heavy battle, and as a result the Gaddafi troops left a number of vehicles. In one of the vehicles was a sack with these items."

He said there was a delay in returning the artifacts because the head of the unit which intercepted them was injured in the fighting soon after. After he returned from medical treatment abroad, he alerted the new government.

Libya overthrew Gaddafi in an seven-month war, the bloodiest of this year's Arab Spring uprisings. The country's cultural heritage emerged from the fighting relatively unscathed.

The biggest theft reported so far was a huge collection of ancient coins, jewelry and statuettes. It went missing from a bank vault in the eastern city of Benghazi early in the conflict when looters drilled through a concrete ceiling.

Patent firm IPCom says to stop HTC German sales (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? German patent firm IPCom plans to halt as quickly as possible the sale of all HTC smartphones in Germany, another blow to the Taiwanese firm just two days after it shocked markets by cutting its fourth-quarter outlook.

IPCom said on Friday it would enforce an injunction based on a Mannheim court decision from February 2009 after HTC, the fourth largest smartphone vendor globally, withdrew its appeal, which was due to be decided on next week.

"IPCom now intends to execute this injunction in the shortest possible time," the company said in a statement.

"We will use the right awarded by the courts, likely resulting in HTC devices disappearing from shops during the crucial Christmas season."

No one at HTC was immediately available to comment.

"I wonder whether HTC will now pay up or somehow block the enforcement," said German patent expert Florian Mueller.

Germany is one of the largest smartphone markets in Europe.

"This represents an unwelcome distraction during an already difficult quarter for HTC," said CCS Insight analyst Geoff Blaber.

Late last month, HTC warned that revenue would fall by up to 8 percent in October-December from the third quarter, and this week it flagged a much bigger drop, citing tougher competition and the global downturn.

The stock has fallen 30 percent in eight straight trading days.

The popularity of Apple's iPhones and Samsung Electronics's Galaxy line-up, recession-weary shoppers and long-running lawsuits have taken the gloss off what was one of the industry's biggest success stories.

IPCom has battled for years against HTC and Nokia in European courts.

IPCom had acquired Bosch's mobile telephony patent portfolio, created between the mid-1980s and 2000, which includes about 160 patent families worldwide, including some of the key patents in the wireless industry, such as patent 100, which standardizes a cellphone's first connection to a network.

Programming Idea: Retro Gaming ? A Fuse #8 Production

Quick and crazy thoughts this lovely Saturday morn.

My library system has this kind of neat website where they can highlight different events on the main page.? I was glancing there the other day and noticed something.? One of the programs there was listed as ?Retro Gaming?.

Instantly I could see it.? The library purchases some old Nintendo NES consoles (gigantic game cartridges and all), some Atari, and maybe a ColecoVision if they?re feeling cheeky.? You get a bunch of old classic games and then have the teens play them.? I guarantee they?d be fascinated.? Heck, at this point in time they?d probably figure it was a history lesson . . . and they?d be right.

As it turned out, my library was talking about chess and checkers and those kinds of ?retro games?.? But I?m rather enthralled with my version.? My husband pointed out that you could just link to old games on the internet and get them that way, but there?s something so much better about having the original joysticks and whatever the heck that ColecoVision device was called.? Many of you guys work in library systems.? Tell it to me true then . . . has anyone ever heard of a library system doing this before?

Sneak Peek At Syfy Channel?s Sanctuary (Video)

It is Friday my friends and you know what that means; Sanctuary is on tonight, woohoo! I realize that many many of you are all caught up in this Black Friday hoopla, not me oh no. I am getting ready to enjoy the Syfy channel hit show Sanctuary that comes on at 9PM EST tonight. Just to get you and myself too of course in the mood I have a fabulous sneak peek video below. This show is freaking awesome and if you haven?t checked it out them I seriously recommend that you do. I admit that I wasn?t that big of a fan at first but my boyfriend who not let up about what a great show it was and how much I would like it. So I gave in watched it and it rules. So here is the lowdown on tonight?s episode, without giving too much away of course. Basically Will and Margus study the brain of Abby, the abnormal and things get a little weird to say the least when they realize that Abby can only communicate through music.
