Slimmer future for heavy kids who get help early

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Weight-loss programs can help even very young children slim down, and it appears that acting early may improve the odds of success, according to a pair of new studies.

"What they are showing is a pretty consistent trend that if we were to intervene early, we could really have an effect on changing the trajectory of weight gain in children," said Dr. Elsie Taveras, a pediatrician at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital, who co-wrote an editorial on the findings.

In one study, Dutch scientists found that heavy three- to five-year-olds saw continued benefits from a weight-loss intervention at least several months after it ended.

And a report from Sweden shows overweight and obese children under 10 were much more likely to slow their weight gain than were adolescents getting similar behavioral treatments.

The two studies were released Monday in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

Excessive pounds in childhood often stay on into adulthood, where they have been linked to heart disease, diabetes and other health problems.

Taveras said there is mounting evidence that paying attention to young kids may be a promising way to stem the global obesity epidemic. In 2008, more than a third of U.S. youths were either overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The numbers have also been on the rise in Europe, although they are still lower than in the U.S.

The Dutch researchers, led by Dr. Gianni Bocca of Beatrix Children's Hospital in Groningen, studied 75 heavy children who had been randomly assigned to get either usual care or an intensive weight-loss program. The program lasted four months and involved 25 sessions with dietary advice, exercise and, for the parents only, behavioral counseling.

A year after the study began, kids in the intervention group had gained 4.2 pounds on average, and those who got usual care had added another 6.8 pounds.

While that difference could have been due to chance, there was a statistically reliable difference in body mass index, or BMI, a measure of height in relation to weight.

Children in the intervention group went one unit down in BMI, while the others saw no change. In adults, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 25.

"The magnitude of the effect, especially initially after the intervention, wasn't very large, but what needs to be taken into account was that these children were growing," Taveras told Reuters Health.

"What these interventions are showing is that you can have an effect, and hopefully these interventions are changing the trajectory the children were headed towards."

PARTICULARLY TOUGH CASES?

She also cautioned that the Swedish findings, led by Pernilla Danielsson of Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, were based on observations instead of an experiment.

That means it's possible that the youngsters between 14 and 16, who saw no or little effect of the behavioral treatment, could have been particularly tough cases.

Still, Taveras said, there is good evidence that heavy kids who start weight-loss programs early have an easier time slimming down.

Weight-loss programs for kids are available from healthcare providers across the country and are often covered by insurance, she said, adding that interested families could ask their pediatrician or check with local public health departments.

The government is also funding research that takes a more comprehensive approach to keeping children's weight healthy. The Childhood Obesity Research Demonstration, for example, includes sites in three states and attacks the problem at various levels. At the Massachusetts site, Taveras said primary care doctors, child care centers and schools are all involved in the efforts.

"I hope that in a few years there will be more examples of programs that aren't just clinical that we can send families to," she said.

Who Do You Complain To About Your Relationship? | Black and ...

I have never really been one of those really big complainers. I normally go with the flow and look for the silver lining in even my most challenging of situations. However, life and relationships always bring certain circumstances into our existence that drives even the best of us into complaint mode. Going into detail about something we were disappointed about is natural. But knowing who to have these conversations with is what?s most important.

When sharing our lives with another person it is almost a guarantee that they, at some point, are going to drive us absolutely crazy. On occasion their bad habits are going to feel unbearable. They are going to say or do something we don?t like or we?re going to be of the opinion that they have not considered our feelings. Various events will take place during the course of a relationship to stretch us, challenge us, and yes provide a reason to complain.

But before we run off to grumble we must take each of the following into consideration:

The thing we want to whine about can actually be resolved if we simply communicate it to our partner. We must be willing to turn complaint mode into solution thinking.

If we still feel the urge to vent, we must be careful in selecting the person with whom we will share. This person should be trustworthy, honest, values marriage and truly loves us. Unfortunately, not everyone in our lives is rooting for our marriage success. Once we determine who those individuals are we make a mental note and are mindful of the information we share with that person.

Take a deep breath and meditate over the situation prior to sharing it with someone other than your spouse. Enjoying our alone time in a quiet and peaceful space allows us to completely clear our minds in order to regroup and refocus.

Asking ourselves what we stand to gain by complaining is an instant eye opener. We immediately see that we don?t normally feel any better as a result. So why even waste our time.

As we continue on this life and relationship journey we can?t lose sight of what is truly important. Being loved and giving love is what most of us seek. The focus should be on what is working in our relationships and adding more of that instead of focusing on what isn?t working without creating a realistic solution.

BMWK family, who do you?complain?to about your relationship? Has complaining to others ever backfired on you?

Ford Reliability Tumbles

Ford Explorer

?

Ford's vaunted reliability ratings have stalled, and their controversial MyFord infotainment system is partially to blame.

?

The domestic brand once boasted top ten status in Consumer Reports' predicted reliability ratings, but a confluence of unfortunate factors plummeted their rankings to a dismal second-to-last place out of 28 brands surveyed, despite several buzzworthy introductions like the Focus ST and CMAX Hybrid.

?

CR cites three reasons for the drop: the aforementioned disappointment of MyFord/MyLincoln and its spread to more models, problems associated with new or updated Explorer, Fiesta, and Focus models, and the fact that three historically reliable vehicles-- the Escape, Fusion, and Lincoln MKZ-- were not included in this year's analysis.

?

The findings are based on subscriber feedback from 1.2 million vehicles, and reflect the difficulty of creating intuitive, easy to learn multimedia interfaces, not to mention the balancing act of introducing vehicle updates while maintaining reliability.?

?

The survey also claimed the Prius C as the top scorer, with Cadillac, the top US brand in the study, moving up 14 spots in the rankings.

Travel & Leisure: Packing for a Ski Holiday - Top Tips

By
Danielle Hodges

Anybody who is new to skiing or snowboarding may feel a mix of excitement and trepidation at the prospect of their first holiday in a ski resort such as Chamonix or Les Gets. Apart from choosing the right catered chalets they will also have to think about the gear that they should take. This overview of winter sports clothing and accessories should come in particularly handy.
Equipment to Rent and Buy
After deciding upon which of the luxurious catered chalets to stay at, you may be tempted to purchase a raft of brand new clothes and accessories online. However, unless you see any special offers then it may be best to wait until you arrive before making a purchase. You'll discover that there are a number of shops that sell second hand and end of season stock for reasonable prices in most of the major resorts. There is also the option of hiring the equipment that you will be using. This is an excellent way of saving money for anybody who takes skiing holidays fairly infrequently.
The Importance of Layers
The wonderful catered chalets that you are staying in will no doubt be warm and cosy, however, after setting first foot on to the snowy slopes it is fairly likely that you'll begin to feel the cold. You might well encounter temperatures of below 20 degrees farenheit and winds that cut through the toughest clothing. It's for this reason that you should wear enough layers that you can be sure of staying relatively warm. It's advisable to wear inner wicking layers that pull sweat away from the body and allow a fair degree of breathability.
The Outer Layer
Although your trusty winter coat may have kept the weather at bay during long, cold days in England, it will probably not do the job on the pistes. You should ideally look for a ski jacket that features special insulating materials and enough pockets for the storage of maps, wallets and goggles. It is also worth buying or renting a couple of pairs of salopets. They are available from most ski-wear retailers and are generally fairly affordable.
Protection for Your Hands and Feet
One of the main complaints that people make when on skiing holidays is that their hands and feet are freezing cold. On particularly chilly days you might even struggle to keep a grip of your ski poles and feel the tips of your toes. If you're to resist the temptation of returning to your snug catered chalets it will be necessary to purchase some good quality ski socks and gloves. You may also look to invest in a pair of shoes that are purpose made for alpine conditions.
