The Broadway play High, starring Kathleen Turner, will close this Sunday after just five days and eight performances, it was announced one day after opening.
This gives High the distinction of the swiftest Broadway closing this season. Last fall, the play?Elling announced its closing a few days after opening night, playing nine post-opening performances. High officially opened Tuesday. The mostly mixed-to-negative reviews clearly prompted producers to cut their losses and opt for sudden death.
Previews have been playing to sparse audiences and last week, the production had a low average ticket price of $18. Advance tickets were reportedly negligible.?
It remains to be seen whether Turner and newcomer Evan Jonigkeit, both of whose performances were well-received, will be eligible for Tony Awards. Swift closings often take a production out of contention given that Tony voters have insufficient time to see the show. Nominations for Broadway's annual awards are announced May 3.
High marks the second early close for playwright Matthew Lombardo and director Rob Ruggiero after last season's Looped.
