Bedford Township celebrated its 175th birthday with week-long festivities ranging from a cake walk to a parade, to a historic bus tour to fireworks.

"It is really hard to imagine 175 years," Bedford Township Supervisor Walt Wilburn said during the kick off for the events July 5. "The best way perhaps to judge the time span of 175 years would be to think about how far we've come to be standing here today."

Bedford Township hosted a proclamation ceremony recognizing the special birthday celebrations. Mr. Wilburn read off a proclamation created for the occasion. The township also received recognition from Gov. Rick Snyder and State Sen. Majority Leader Randy Richardville, R-Monroe.

"One hundred seventy-five years ago today, we would have had to get a bucket of water from the creek and carry it in and pour it into a pitcher and then use it sparingly to brush our teeth," Mr. Wilburn said.

He reminded the 60 people gathered at the event that they did not have to bring in wood from outdoors to start a fire to cook their breakfasts.

"You probably grabbed a ready-made fruit bar or cereal or flipped on a burner to cook eggs in a skillet," Mr. Wilburn said.

Back when the township was first formed, people would have only one pair of shoes to put on, Mr. Wilburn said.

"Aren't we so glad we live in Michigan at this time?" he asked.

After a short introduction, Mr. Wilburn read from the proclamation.

Bedford Township was approved by the state legislature on March 23, 1836. The area was organized into Bedford Township on March 20, 1837.

The first election took place on May 2, 1836 at the home of Levi Lewis where William Dunbar was elected as the first supervisor.

Yesterdays Sentimental Journey provided music during the ceremony. The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lambertville Post 9656 served as the color guard and hosted a 21-gun salute.

Art Libstroff, post chaplain recited a short prayer.

"Remember the past, but watch look ahead to the future," Mr. Libstroff said in part.

Near the end of the celebration, visitors sang "Happy Birthday" to the township.
