Pilot whales use synchronized swimming when they sense danger

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2012) ? An international team of scientists have observed the behavior of various groups of cetaceans in the Strait of Gibraltar and Cape Breton in Canada belonging to the Globicephala melas species, which are also known as long-finned pilot whales. These results show that these whales use synchronized swimming when they identify the presence of an external threat.

There are 300 pilot whales inhabiting the Straight of Gibraltar. Here these cetaceans remain throughout the entire year in the water of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. But, little is known about their social structure.

Headed by the University of Aberdeen (United Kingdom) in collaboration with the Do?ana Biological Station (CSIC) and Conservation, Information and Study on Cetaceans (CIRCE) group, the study analyzed the patterns of association between individuals within this whale community. The aim was to provide a long-term vision of their social system.

"The important point is that we compared two different populations: one inhabiting the Strait of Gibraltar which is exposed to predators (boats in this case) and another with an ecotype where there are not so many boats (Cape Breton in Canada). The pilot whales are social species and we were interested in seeing how mothers teach their young, for example. We observed that they use synchronized swimming when in danger," as explained Renaud de Stephanis, researcher of the Biological Station of Do?ana and coauthor of the study published in the journal behavioral Processes.

Between 1999 and 2006 the scientists gathered samples in an area of 23,004 km in the Strait of Gibraltar and took 4,887 images of the dorsal fins of whales to compare them with those in Canada.

"They swim in complete synchrony both in the Strait of Gibraltar and Canada. When sea traffic or whale watching vessels are nearby, the whole group collectively reacts to such external stimuli. When we arrived at the watching area they were swimming at their normal rhythm but after 10 or 15 minutes near to them, the mothers and their young began to swim in a synchronized manner in alert position. This is a sign of affiliation to the group," adds the expert.

According to the researcher, these cetaceans also have a social structure formed by permanent partnerships. This means that they spend their life with the same whales and they do not interchange between different groups, as in the case of bottlenose dolphins.

Thanks to the study we now know that the presence of vessels also disturbs diving behavior. "As such, when we began observing the whales up close, they tended to spend quite some time on the surface. However, the longer we spent nearby, the longer they stayed under water. This behavioral change could affect their energy levels, since they then have to make more of an effort to protect themselves and their young. In turn this limits hunting time, which means that they cannot feed their young properly," concludes the researcher.

And in Catholic news as this Thanksgiving (in America) week ends--a series of consecutive postings ?focusing on particular issues, beginning with news about the shadowy but exceptionally well-heeled right-wing Catholic academic watchdog group, the Cardinal Newman Society, about which I've written frequently in the past (click on the label beneath this posting for my previous statements about the Cardinal Newman Society):

The Cardinal Newman Society is hyperactive these days, having played a leading role in the recent d?bacle at the University of San Diego, where British Catholic theologian Tina Beattie was first invited and then disinvited to be a visiting fellow, as USD president Mary Lyons told Beattie the university couldn't have a theologian who dissents from church teaching as a fellow on its campus. ?Joshua McElwee notes the role played in this shoddy narrative by the Cardinal Newman Society. ?(Beattie's primary sin: she signed a statement in August supporting marriage equality.) And now the group is going after yet another theologian?(and see this California Catholic story), Lisa Fullam, who teaches moral theology at Berkeley's Jesuit School of Theology and who is a regular at Commonweal.? Fullam's sin: she celebrated the victory of marriage equality at the polls recently in a posting at the Commonweal?blog. ?Two Catholic theologians, two women?theologians, targeted by this mysterious self-appointed watchdog group specifically because of their support of marriage equality . . . .

As Dan Morris-Young points out, the funding streams of this political-as-religious group are murky. ?Though the Cardinal Newman Society claims that its funds come from donations of its members, it has?no members. ?Meanwhile, its president and vice-president pull in six-figure salaries, and its revenues jumped by more than 50% in the last five years.

The upshot of the kind of political-academic watchdoggery in American Catholicism: American Catholic colleges and universities lose credibility as bona fide?academic institutions in the academy at large. ?As the British Catholic journal The Tablet?notes in its latest editorial statement about the Beattie d?bacle,*?

The issue of academic freedom versus Catholic identity is a fraught one in the United States where there are many Catholic campuses. Many British Catholic academics have always preferred to work in a secular context and there has never been much enthusiasm in Britain for the idea of a Catholic university. The reason may be that under the draconian terms of Pope John Paul II?s 1990 apostolic constitution Ex Corde Ecclesiae, it would not fit into British academic culture. The constitution states, for instance: "In ways appropriate to the different academic disciplines, all Catholic teachers are to be faithful to, and all other teachers are to respect, Catholic doctrine and morals in their research and teaching."

And there's also this to be considered: not only does the kind of political bullying that goes on?with groups like the Cardinal Newman Society?under the guise of maintaining orthodoxy undermine the reputation of Catholic universities as real?universities. ?But it also undermines the witness of the Catholic church in the American public square, since it seeks to confine the definition of Catholicism within narrow, partisan parameters that have nothing to do with Catholic ideas and values in the final analysis.

It creates an idol out of one political party, and tries to make all American Catholics bow down to that idol. ?This mentality is strongly represented among American bishops like Daniel Jenky of Peoria, Illinois.

It betrays authentic Catholic identity via its political idolatry, and brings Catholicism into disrepute in the public square, assuring that people with intellectual acumen and strong consciences simply ignore what the bishops and their orthodoxy watchdog groups have to say about anything at all.

Why the hyperactivity of the Cardinal Newman Society right now? ?In my view, the Society is in hyperdrive after the 2012 elections for two reasons. ?First, it and its unnamed benefactors are angry. ?They're angry that their attempt to control the American Catholic conversation through the hidden flow of shady big money is not paying the kinds of returns they expect for their investment. ?And they're angry that their bullying tactics designed to keep the conversation under their control aren't working, as a large percentage of American Catholics ignore the bishops' instructions to vote Republican.

And they're afraid. ?They're afraid of the kind of multicultural church coming into being before their eyes, as they fight tooth and nail to keep "their" church dominated by conservative, affluent, white Catholics, while the American Catholic church becomes increasingly brown and increasingly progressive in its politics. ?We can look for more reactionary moves by the Cardinal Newman Society and its undisclosed big-bucks donors in the days to come, I suspect, because the anger and the fear are not going to go away anytime soon, and are growing larger due to the recent election results.

BlackBerry maker wins vote of confidence ahead of BB10

TORONTO (Reuters) - Research In Motion Ltd, for months enveloped by a wave of negative sentiment, got a boost on Tuesday when one of its most influential critics raised his rating on the stock ahead of the launch of RIM's make-or-break new line of BlackBerry 10 devices.

The upgrade by Jefferies & Co analyst Peter Misek pushed RIM's share price into double digits for the first time in five months, with the stock up more than 3 percent at $10.04 in early trading on the Nasdaq.

Misek based his more optimistic view of the BB10 launch, set for January 30, on a favorable reaction by telecom carriers to the devices and the new operating system that powers them.

"Preliminary results from our quarterly handset survey indicate developed market carriers have a much more positive view of BB10 than we expected," Misek said in a note to clients.

Shares of Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM, a one-time leader in the smartphone industry, have plummeted in recent years as its aging line-up of devices lost ground to faster and snazzier devices from rivals. The company has bet its future on the new BB10.

RIM hopes BB10 smartphones will help claw back market share it has lost in recent years to Apple Inc's iPhone and devices that run on Google Inc's Android operating system.

Misek, who doubled his price target on shares of RIM to $10 from $5, also raised his rating on the stock to "hold" from "underperform".

"With greater carrier shelf space and marketing support, we now believe BB10 has a 20 percent to 30 percent probability of success," said Misek, who has long been skeptical of RIM's odds of engineering a turnaround.

Misek cautioned that there is still downside if RIM's gamble on BB10 fails, but he noted that the stock could be worth as much as $43 within the next 12 months if RIM's bet pays off and its new operating system gets licensed by other handset makers.

RIM says its new devices will be faster and smoother and have a large catalog of applications, which are now critical to the success of any new line of smartphones. While feedback from both developers and carriers on the new devices has been largely upbeat, financial analysts have been much more circumspect about the company's prospects.

Misek's view is not shared by at least one of his counterparts.

In a note to clients on Monday, Pacific Crest analyst James Faucette reiterated his "underperform" rating on RIM's shares. He said regardless of its quality, there is almost no chance that BB10 will meaningfully change RIM's trajectory.

RIM shares were up 3.7 percent at $9.95 at midmorning on the Nasdaq, while its Toronto-listed shares rose 3.1 percent to C$9.89.

For those of you who are pack rats, or have parents who are pack rats, you may still have the document.

PERSONAL NOTE: I have many of my daughters? early writings. All gems.

I?m giving you this reminder, this bit of nostalgic instant memory, so I can issue you the following challenges: How have you progressed since then?

How much better are your writing skills? How much better are your presentation skills? And how important are those skills to your sales success, your business success, your social media success, and your career success?

I?ve been a professional writer and professional speaker for 20 years. But like you, I?ve been an amateur since the third grade when I talked about what I did on my summer vacation, and in the fourth grade when I wrote about Hurricane Hazel, which rocked Atlantic City where my family was living at the time. (If you Google it, you can figure out how old I am!)

What most people don?t understand is their initial training forms the foundation of their present skills. Your grammar, your ability to spell, your self-confidence to be able to speak, and your overall character are formulated by your ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

Every one of you reading this is now thinking, maybe I should have paid more attention when my high school English teacher was drilling the difference of there, their, and they?re or the difference of your and you?re.

The real answer is, they are not nervous, they are not uncomfortable ? those are symptoms. The real issue is they are UNPREPARED. They lack the experience, the subject matter expertise, or suffer from limited self-image or low self-esteem ? or perhaps all four.

This is further complicated by the fact that most of you reading this know what show is on television on Wednesday night at 9 o?clock, and you?re glued to the set to see witness the next episode of ?other people?s drama.? You make a conscience choice to watch something rather than to learn something or do something.

Perhaps if you took a Dale Carnegie course on public speaking, or join a Toastmasters group, you would be able to become a confident presenter.

Perhaps if you started your own blog, and at the age of 30 or 40, you write about what you did on your summer vacation, you might be able to attract people with similar likes and values as they search the internet, same as you.

Please do not confuse this column as a call to action. Rather it is a call to reality.

Man arrested after death of monkey at Idaho zoo

BOISE, Idaho (AP) ? Police have arrested one of two men who they believe broke into an Idaho zoo the night a monkey there died from blunt-force trauma, but questions remain about how and why the animal was killed.

Michael J. Watkins, 22, of Weiser was arrested Monday in Washington County on felony burglary and grand theft charges.

A tip from a citizen led police to Watkins after identifying a hat found in the monkey's enclosure as similar to one Watkins was wearing the night two intruders were spotted at Zoo Boise. A security guard frightened away the intruders, then discovered the gravely injured patas monkey, which died a short time later.

Masterson said at a news conference Monday evening that Watkins sought care at a hospital for injuries to his upper torso sometime after the early Saturday incident. The story he gave to hospital staff "did not seem to mesh up with the injuries," Masterson said.

The monkey's death has left zoo workers shocked and devastated, zoo director Steve Burns said. The Crime Stoppers organization offered an award of up to $1,000 for information leading to the culprits' arrest.

Investigators had not had a chance to question Watkins extensively and have not revealed whether they think the zoo break-in was a prank that turned violent or something done with more sinister intent. But the police department and community are "angered and outraged over this senseless crime," Masterson said.

"The loss of this patas monkey has touched many lives, including our officers and investigators," he said.

The zoo doesn't have surveillance video. Instead, security guards patrol the grounds when the zoo is closed.

Burns said the guard who discovered the crime spotted one intruder inside the zoo and one outside the perimeter fence near the primate exhibit. Both men fled, with one running into the interior of the zoo.

Investigators believe Watkins is the man who was seen inside the fence.

Burns and police were searching the grounds when Burns heard a groan and found the injured monkey outside its exhibit, near the fence surrounding the zoo. They were able to get the animal into a crate and to the zoo's animal hospital, but the monkey died of blunt-force trauma to its head and neck just a few minutes later.

An inventory showed none of the other animals was missing or harmed.

Police say Watkins was visiting Boise with friends over the weekend from his home in Weiser, an agricultural town about 60 miles away near the Oregon-Idaho border.

Court records show Watkins has been in trouble with the law before, including drug arrests. Police said they do not know whether Watkins may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the break-in.

Officers have spoken with the other man spotted outside the zoo but do not expect charges to be filed against him, Masterson said.

Crimes at the zoo are rare, Burns said.

"I've been here for 15 years, and I don't remember any cases where we've had a visitor intentionally or even accidentally injure an animal," Burns said. "People in Boise are usually pretty respectful. We were just saying the other day that we can't even remember the last time that someone was found inside the zoo after hours. The security guards do a really good job."

Burns said it will take a few weeks before he can decide if the remaining patas monkey will be sent to another zoo or if another patas monkey will be brought in as a companion. The animals are social and need to be around members of their own species.

The crime may have raised interest in the patas monkeys. A donation for the remaining patas monkey under the zoo's adopt-an-animal program came in over the weekend, Burns said.

The monkey exhibit remains open to the public, although zoo workers were keeping some of the larger garage-sized doors to the exhibit closed to keep down noise, and keepers were giving the remaining patas monkey a little more attention, Burns said. The zoo kicked off a fundraiser to build a new exhibit house for the primates in September.

"That primate house was built back in the 1960s and it's just time to update it and provide the animals with more space and things like that," he said.

For now, he said, zoo workers are just focusing on caring for the remaining 300 animals at the zoo.

"We're going to grieve for the animal and make sure the community's OK. But we're going to move on with the plans that we have and continue to take care of the animals. Boise's a really nice place to live, and usually this kind of stuff doesn't happen in Boise," he said.

Church Distancing Itself from Husband of Murder Victim

GRANDVIEW, Mo. ? The International House of Prayer is distancing itself further from the leader of a religious group whose wife was murdered in a conspiracy of drugs and sex in a statement on Friday, but the latest statement from the church is raising even more questions about its relationship with Tyler Deaton and what the church knew about him.

Bethany Deaton?s body was found in a van at Grandview Lake on October 30th. Her death thought to be a suicide until a man confessed to killing her, telling police he was ordered to do it by the victim?s husband allegedly to cover up sexual assaults.

All three were members of the International House of Prayer, and at one time the church listed Deaton as a group leader ? a listing Friday?s statement said was inaccurate.

Ever since the sordid details of drugs, sex, religion and murder have come to light, the International House of Prayer has distanced itself from the small religious group to which the man charged with murder and the victim?s husband belonged.

The church has said Deaton and his group operated independently from the church and ?under a veil of secrecy.?? However, there were warnings.

First in June, according to the statement, someone approached IHOP?s small groups director raising concerns about Deaton?s manipulative behavior in his independent bible study group.

At the time the church says the director met with Deaton and mistakenly concluded that these concerns had been resolved.? Though the church says the concerns did not include any reference to the sexual perversion, sexual assault or malicious practice that were exposed only after Bethany?s death.

Second, an early November website posting listed Tyler Deaton as a Division Coordinator on the administrative team of the International House of Prayer Friendship Groups. The posting was taken down after Deaton?s roommate confessed to killing Deaton?s wife and accused Deaton of ordering the murder.

The church says the listing of Deaton?s name was an error made by a volunteer and that Deaton was never a group coordinator.? The church also says it regrets Deaton?s admission to IHOPU four years ago and all connection he had with the organization.

IHOP?s leader in charge of small groups did not return our calls for comment.? Tyler Deaton has also not returned our calls or emails.

Oil rig fire kills at least 2 off Louisiana coast

OFF THE GULF COAST -? Two people were killed, another two were reported missing and at least four were airlifted in critical condition after a fire and explosion at a shallow water platform in the Gulf of Mexico about 20 miles south of Grand Isle Friday morning.

Plaquemines Parish and Grand Isle officials said the fire was under control though a handful of people were still on the platform battling the fire as of 11 a.m. According to the Coast Guard the structure of platform is "intact with no structural damage. There was believed to be no oil leaking into the Gulf.

There were 28 people were on the platform at the time of the explosion and eight people were involved in the incident, according to officials from Plaquemines Parish. CBS News reported that two jumped into the water and they were believed to be the ones missing.

The four people airlifted to West Jefferson Medical Center were said by a spokesperson Taslin Alfonso to be in critical condition. They were being treated in anticipation of being shipped to the Burn Center in Baton Rouge.

Grand Isle officials said two others who were on the platform were being treated by EMS in Grand Isle and considered to be "walking wounded." There conditions were not known.

Captain Peter Gautier of the Coast Guard said the platform, run by Black Elk Energy, was not producing oil and no enviromental threat is anticipated. A federal official says a team of environmental enforcement inspectors is flying to the scene.

David Smith, a spokesman for the Interior Department's Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, said the team was dispatched from a Gulf Coast base by helicopter soon after the U.S. Coast Guard was notified of the emergency. Smith said the team would scan for any evidence of oil spilling and investigate the cause of the explosion.

Gautier said it is believed that the incident occurred as maintenance workers were cutting a pipe and some oil may have gotten loose, causing the fire.

The Coast Guard said that after the incident, rescues were conducted by the Guard and by Good Samaritans.

The platform is believed to belong to Black Elk Energry out of Houston, Texas. It produces both oil and natural gas.

?We cannot confirm or deny anything at this time, but we are assembling an incident command team right now,? said Black Elk Energy asset manager Kirk Trascher.

Gold and Silver Bullish Technicals :: The Market Oracle :: Financial ...

With the US stock markets falling sharply since the elections, shell-shocked investors are scrambling for the exits.? And this mass exodus is certainly rational in light of 2013?s record tax hikes looming for American investors.? But with interest rates near record lows, cash yields nothing and bonds are hyper-risky.? So a fantastic alternative for capital is the precious metals, which are very cheap technically.

For many contrarians, the investment potential of precious metals is blindingly obvious.? Over the past decade or so, gold and silver have rocketed 638% and 1105% higher at best!? But despite these stupendous gains, investment in precious metals remains low.? The financial establishment has long discouraged investors from buying gold and silver, as they don?t generate all kinds of fees like stocks.

This chronic underinvestment is easily illustrated by the amounts of capital in stocks versus the leading gold and silver ETFs.? At the end of last month, all 500 elite companies in the flagship S&P 500 stock index had a collective market capitalization of $13,349b.? Meanwhile the total holdings of GLD and SLV were only worth about $73b and $10b respectively, just 0.5% and 0.1% of the capital invested in stocks!

So despite their long secular bull markets, gold and silver still have lots of room left to run.? Investors remain radically underinvested in precious metals, even though they were the best-performing asset class of the past decade.? And fortuitously for the legions of investors now dumping stocks to avoid the fiscal-cliff disaster, gold, silver, and their miners are actually very cheap technically.? Now is an excellent time to buy.

Today?s bullish precious-metals technicals are readily apparent in long-term price charts.? The goal of investing is to buy low and sell high, and gold, silver, and their miners? stocks are definitely on the low side of historic precedent today.? I doubt any other major destinations for stock-market flight capital offer a better combination of proven performance and near-future appreciation potential than the PMs.

Before we delve into the charts, some background is in order.? In any bull market, prices rise and fall.? They advance two steps forward in mighty uplegs before retreating one step back in sharp corrections.? Prices eventually run too far too fast in uplegs, becoming overbought.? Then corrections force the other extreme, prices falling too far too fast which leaves them oversold.? Soon after is the best time to buy.

But in order to time buying within ongoing secular bulls, investors need some objective way of measuring price action.? That removes the deadly emotions of greed and fear, which seduce naive investors into buying high late in uplegs and selling low late in corrections.? The buy-low-sell-high mission is to do the opposite, sell after prices have rallied too far too fast and buy after they have dropped too far too fast.

Thus many years ago I created a simple tool to indeed objectively measure price action, called Relativity.? It considers prices relative to a slowly-changing baseline, their 200-day moving averages.? When this metric is charted over time, it reveals a horizontal trading range.? If you aren?t familiar with this wildly profitable trading tool, you really ought to read my latest essay on Relativity Trading to quickly get up to speed.

Today gold, silver, and the flagship HUI gold-stock index are all low in their relative trading ranges.? They are far closer to being oversold, the time to buy, than overbought.? These Relativity charts are compelling.? In each the relative multiple, the price divided by its 200dma, is slaved to the left axis in red.? And then the actual price is overlaid in blue tied to the right axis.? The precious-metals technicals are very bullish today.

In any ongoing bull, a price pulls away from its 200dma in uplegs before returning in corrections.? When the blue gold price above is divided by its black 200dma, the red Relative Gold (rGold) line is the result.? It effectively flattens the 200dma line to horizontal at 1.0x and render?s gold?s movements relative to it in perfectly-comparable percentage terms over time.? rGold has formed a well-defined horizontal trading range.

It ranges from gold trading at 1.05x its 200dma on the low side to 1.25x on the high side.? The 1.05x line, shown in light green, is gold?s relative support.? Whenever gold trades at or below this level, it is usually a great time to buy.? With the exceptions of that crazy stock panic in 2008 and a high consolidation earlier this year, gold embarked on major rallies soon after it witnessed depressed sub-1.05x rGold levels.

Just this week, rGold was trading under 1.04x.? Gold was only 3.7% above its 200-day moving average, meaning it is technically oversold.? This metal has fallen deeply out of favor recently.? This shouldn?t be a surprise, as it always happens after any major upleg peaks.? Prices need to either correct sharply or grind sideways long enough to bleed away all traders? excessive greed and euphoria from the preceding topping.

Look at how gold prices have behaved in the past after gold fell below 1.05x its 200dma.? In every case gold subsequently rallied, and the longer the time it spent below 1.05x the larger its subsequent gains.? The most extreme example was during the stock panic, after which gold blasted 167% higher in 2.8 years!? It is provocative that rGold was once again near panic levels this past summer, incredibly oversold.

Leading into its most-recent euphoric topping in August 2011, gold was wildly overbought as I warned at the time.? Greed was excessive, with traders assuming the metal was going to keep on surging indefinitely.? But trading above 1.25x its 200dma, it had advanced too far too fast to be sustainable.? So in order to bleed off that greed, it started to grind sideways.? This consolidation has now lasted 15 months, averaging around $1675.

The result is gold has fallen deeply out of favor, greed has been totally eradicated.? The corrections or consolidations that follow major uplegs exist to do just that.? So we are in a situation today where gold is essentially loathed, where the vast majority of investors have largely given up on it.? But this is a dream come true for contrarians willing to fight the crowd, a chance to buy low today before the next upleg.

Secular bull markets are a function of supply and demand, and gold?s stellar fundamentals assure its bull is far from over.? While global investment demand grows, its supply remains heavily constrained.? More and more investors are gradually turning to gold, yet finding and mining this metal remains more challenging and expensive and risky than ever before.? Prices rise when demand exceeds supply.

So fundamentally another upleg is inevitable, yet gold remains oversold in relative terms.? The last time it spent so long languishing under its 200dma was during 2008?s stock panic, and after that it nearly tripled over the subsequent few years.? So the stage is set for a truly massive gold upleg in the coming months and years, an enormous move higher.? This is fantastic news for investors exiting the risky stock markets.

And as goes gold, so goes silver.? The white metal is a leveraged play on what the yellow metal is doing.? When gold is rallying, silver amplifies its gains.? And when gold is correcting, silver falls faster.? So it shouldn?t be surprising that the Relative Silver situation today mirrors the bullish technicals seen in gold.? Silver has actually been consolidating considerably longer than gold at 21 months, giving it more potential to soar.

Since silver is far more volatile than gold, the rSilver trading range is naturally wider.? Silver is oversold when it falls under 0.95x its 200dma, and overbought when it exceeds 1.40x.? After a massive upleg far more extreme than gold?s that topped in the spring of 2011, silver has been consolidating around $34 ever since.? This has given traders nearly two years to get comfortable with today?s price levels as the new normal.

The result of this sideways grind is rSilver near 1.05x this week.? While no longer oversold and wildly undervalued like it was this past summer, the white metal still remains low in its relative range.? Look at what happened after past episodes where silver was trading near 1.05x after emerging from a support approach.? It soon rallied sharply in major uplegs.? Odds are this precedent will again repeat soon.

Before this past summer, the last time silver spent so much time so far under its 200dma was during the stock panic.? And after falling so deeply out of favor in that episode of extreme oversoldness, silver ultimately blasted a staggering 443% higher over the subsequent 2.4 years.? It?s provocative that this metal was once again trading near similar panic levels this past summer, implying a major new upleg is now underway.

All short-term price action is dominated by sentiment, greed and fear.? And traders? collective emotions swing back and forth between these two extremes like a giant pendulum.? The last sentiment extreme witnessed in silver was fear and despair this past summer, which means the great emotional pendulum is slowly starting to swing towards the opposite greed end of its arc.? Only a major upleg can generate such greed.

Provocatively one thing that is going to help drive a renaissance in gold and silver investment demand is the Fed?s massive inflation.? The Fed?s recently-announced third quantitative-easing campaign is open-ended, which is incredibly bullish for the precious metals.? Washington?s central bank is rapidly expanding the money supply to help monetize the Obama Administration?s unprecedented record debt growth.

And few things are more bullish for precious-metals demand than monetary inflation.? While the fiscal cliff is dominating the markets? attention now, gradually the Fed?s rampant inflation will creep into the limelight.? The general knowledge of relatively more dollars chasing relatively fewer ounces of gold and silver will lead traders to quickly bid up their prices.? Gold and silver certainly won?t remain so cheap technically for long.

For over a decade now, we?ve been formally advising our subscribers to invest in physical gold and silver coins held in their own immediate possession.? I started recommending gold coins in May 2001 when it traded near $264, and silver coins in November 2001 when it was just over $4.? So to me and our subscribers this whole gold and silver thing is old hat, we?ve already earned fortunes in this secular bull.

Thus today miners of gold and silver are far more exciting than the metals themselves.? This final chart looks at the leading gold-stock index, commonly known by its symbol HUI (?huey?).? While gold and silver have fallen out of favor in the recent consolidations, their miners? stocks have been shot and left for dead.? They have fallen so far behind the gold and silver bulls that their prospects are phenomenally bullish.

Like silver, the PM stocks are far more volatile than gold.? So the HUI?s relative trading range in recent years has also run between 0.95x its 200dma on the low side to 1.40x on the high side.? Gold stocks are overbought and due to correct when the rHUI exceeds 1.40x, but they are oversold and likely to rally in a new upleg when this metric falls below 0.95x.? As of the middle of this week, the rHUI slumped to 0.97x.

Examine this chart and look what happened after other times the HUI traded near 0.95x.? Most of the time major advances soon followed.? When PM stocks are oversold and fear reigns, the great majority of the near-term sellers have been squeezed out.? So buyers picking up the cheap stocks regain the balance of power and the capital inflows soon drive rallies.? The rHUI is positioned perfectly today for another one.

There were a couple major exceptions, when the HUI remained under its 200dma for way longer than normal.? The first was during the stock panic, and the second thanks to a brutal gold-stock capitulation this past spring.? That once-in-a-lifetime fear superspike ignited by the panic was self-explanatory in crushing PM stocks.? Realize that afterwards the HUI soared 319% higher over the next 2.9 years!

So to see the rHUI once again slump near panic levels this past spring and summer is super-bullish.? The PM stocks have rarely been so out of favor, which means the sentiment pendulum is overdue to swing forcefully towards the greed side again.? And only a major new upleg can generate this emotion.? With the short-lived exception of the panic?s bowels, we?ve never seen a better buying opportunity in this entire bull.

The PM stocks are wildly undervalued relative to the prices of the metals they mine, which drive their profits and hence ultimately their stock prices.? The HUI has effectively been consolidating around 450 for 60 months now, dwarfing the consolidations in gold and silver.? When the HUI first hit 450 in November 2007, gold was trading near $825 and silver had just crossed $15!? It was a very different world.

So to see the PM stocks in aggregate trading at the same levels today with gold near $1725 and silver near $32 is ludicrous.? As I showed in an essay this past summer, the gold stocks have never been more profitable in an absolute sense.? Their valuations are lower than the general stock markets?, in true value territory!? And they continue to trade near panic levels relative to gold, which simply isn?t sustainable.

With gold stocks dirt-cheap and low technically, the opportunities in this sector are vast beyond belief.? They could easily double or triple from here during the next gold and silver uplegs.? I fully realize virtually no one thinks PM stocks will ever rally again these days, but that is part of their allure.? The best investors are the contrarians, that rare breed smart and tough enough to be brave when everyone else is afraid.

I started buying and recommending gold and silver stocks in 2001 when the HUI averaged 60.? Just after a mighty secular bull in general stocks, the small fraction of mainstream investors even aware of the precious metals thought anyone buying them was insane.? Despite their massive runs in the decade-plus since, PM stocks have always been a highly-contrarian realm.? They never captured mainstream acclaim.

So if you are relatively new to PM stocks and their recent years? consolidation has discouraged you, realize that this tiny sector has always been an uphill battle psychologically.? The commentary on PM stocks is usually bearish, and after corrections or consolidations predictions of doom abound.? Nevertheless, the HUI still rocketed 1664% higher at best over a decade where general stocks were flat at best!

As is always the case when sentiment is the most rotten, the precious metals are great buys today.? Their prices are low technically, which is very fortuitous for the flood of capital leaving the risky general stock markets.? If you are exiting stocks and need a place to park capital that will stay well ahead of the Fed?s inflation and probably even multiply your wealth, it is impossible to beat gold, silver, and their miners.

And the timing couldn?t be more fortuitous with the general stock markets rolling over.? With much higher taxes and a continuing weak economy to look forward to, investors don?t have many appealing options.? But the excessive government spending the Fed is monetizing will lead to serious inflation.? So gold, silver, and their best miners? stocks offer a fantastic refuge to grow your capital in a tough environment.
