The Skinny on Pregnant Mamas in Heels | Skinny Mom | Tips for ...

Okay, I?ll admit it, I love heels ? I love the way they look, I love the way they make me feel, and I love being able to physically alter myself to the height I was not genetically blessed with.? I?m no Imelda Marcos, boasting thousands of shoes in her collection; instead I am a very selective shoe shopper to the chagrin of my husband who often laughs, commenting that all of my heels look all too similar.

But, when you mix this perhaps unhealthy love of sky-high heels with pregnancy, you better be prepared for the public onslaught. This vice of mine is the recipient of comments from men and women of all ages who are seemingly abhorred at my choice in footwear. Most recently, I had a woman stop me in the hallway to say, ?You are still wearing those heels, huh.? I took the chance to smile, hoping it was a compliment and replied, ?Yes, and I hope to be wearing them until my due date!? to which she shook her head disapprovingly and said, ?Well, if you think that?s safe, then so be it.? I walked away shamefully wondering when did being pregnant give the world of strangers a free pass at judging.

In an attempt to lick my wounds and harness some quick rebuttal facts to throw in my favor at these now regular comments, I took to the internet to see what?s out there regarding pregnant women in heels. My first search resulted in a host of websites all discussing the Bravo reality hit show, Pregnant in Heels starring Rosie Pope (great show). I was more specific in my second search and found a plethora of opinions on the matter:

?Being fashionable and beautiful during pregnancy is important. For some pregnant women, wearing high heels during pregnancy is a fashion statement they grew accustomed to making before conception occurred. Unfortunately, once pregnant, wearing high heels is not acceptable and will most likely be very uncomfortable.? Babymed.com

?Stilettos for pregnant women are not inherently dangerous, according to doctors. But when a woman?s weight and shape change during pregnancy, so does her center of gravity. Because of this, she may be more prone to falls, falls that could have dire consequences. Otherwise, a lot of the risk is to her own comfort. ?ABCNews.com

Also, I noted several celebrities who also faced recent criticism including Rachel Zoe, Kourtney Kardashian and Jessica Simpson, all of whom made it through their pregnancies. It was a relief to know I?m in good company on this controversial matter. I guess what it boils down to is that there are a lot of choices that mommys must make throughout pregnancy and afterwards that are not black or white but rather gray. Lucky for me there are endless gray shoes out this season to stylishly occupy me in this gray area!
